Was cleaning my deer today and found what looks like small black tubes in the meat. Is this meat safe to eat? About an inch long.probably found 20 of them

That's very strange. I wonder if any of the large processors like Flowers have seen that before???

Did you happen to take a pic of it when it was in the meat.Don't know if you could have seen it before you cut it out?

No I didn't I never even thought of it meat looks fine though. It was actually a yearling I never realized it until after I shot her. No mama was around.

This is just a guess but i have seen something similar in some of the deer that i have killed i just thought it was that bigger vein in their back hams.Got me thinking now

Actually that's what my initial thought was. That's what it look like. But I never found more than an inch at a time

That's about the size of the ones i have seen.Maybe someone else has seen this.

Most likely hemal nodes. They are odd blood developing centers that form in the lymphatic system. They can form anywhere in the lymph system. They are normal (although not often found) and pose no risk to the meat.

This is probably the answer, and I have seen hemal nodes before, but none of that perfect helical tube shape, and none in the meat. Were they in the "meat" as you previously stated, or in the fat?
