"Stopping" a Coyote

I've read where you guys call in a coyote and then stop him before shooting.
Other than a rifle, what do you use to stop the coyote? (I'm equating it to calling a deer to get it to hesitate or stop).
Going for my first time this weekend and don't want to be taking running shots.
 
I just whistle. They will usually stop for a second, but I have had them turn and run immediatly.
I had to yell at one really loud one time while deer hunting, it must have been partially deaf.

My nephew didin't believe you could talk to deer. That was until I stopped a doe by giving her the sheep "bahh".

Hope I get the time to try this out this weekend. The farmer across the road with cattle is ready to have some removed.
