Does anybody bring a syringe with the into the woods to drain the urine from bucks and does when you kill them? I just figured that bringing a safety needle out in my pack and then "borrowing" (ill give it back later) their urine to use as an attractant wasn't a bad idea. Anybody else do this?

sounds like a reasonable enough idea lol. But it doesnt mean near enough to me to go through that process!

I know people who do it. I've just had such good luck using my own urine as an attractant in scrpaes, why go to the trouble of draining a deer's bladder?

I think that i'll give both a try and see what the results are. The wife is a nurse and can get me the safety needles so I figure it is worth a shot.

I have a friend in Michigan who has had excellent results with cutting the tarsal off of a killed older buck, cutting the tarsal into strips, and saving the strip for later use (as a scent attractant) by freezing them in small containers filled with urine collected from the same buck. However, he claims you need to use these on a different property than where the buck was killed. He believes they work so well as attractants because other bucks come to investigate the scent of a "new" buck to the area.

BSK- that makes pretty good sense with bucks being so territorial. Would it be better to use a young buck though so that the scent of a mature one does not scare off all the other bucks?

I once met a man in SW TN while out deer hunting and he swore by this method as well. He showed me some pretty nice pics of bucks that he claimed to have killed using this technique. He, too, said he always used the tarsal on a different farm than the one he killed it on.

You would want the age buck that interests the age buck you are targetting. If you are after mature bucks, you would want to use the tarsal and urine of a mature buck. A younger buck's tarsal/urine may be of no interest to a mature buck.

Yes I do this all the time. For me it does two things: I'm able to empty the deer's bladder without tainting the meat and two I have free, fresh deer urine to put out as an attractant and it has worked for me. I use a 60cc syringe and then freeze or put it in the fridge if I'm going to use it in a day or so.

I've also had luck using tarsal glands. Usually freeze these as well.

all I need is a cold glass bottle of Sun Drop and within the hour, my powerhouse of a bladder is loading up supply on supposed deer attractant. But from personal experience, I can not say one type of urine works better than the other because I haven't been hunting long enough or using pee enough to have any results...

I just pour the urine sac into a bottle when i have done it.

First use a wide mouth jar. drop urine sack in it let it empty then pour into smaller spray bottle.

I use to collect it with a 50 ml syringe and a 20g needle then aliquot it out into 2 or 5 ml freeze tubes. (I'm sure your wife has pretty easy access to all this if she's a nurse.) Like Goodwin mentioned, I'd freeze it until I was ready to use it. One thing to consider is it's not concentrated like the store bought stuff so you may need to put out at least 25-50ml of the natural urine to get the same scent profile as a drop or two of the cow urine (store bought). Whether it works or not as an attractant....??? I don't think it can hurt.

I had no idea anyone else performed this surgery.

I have been doing this for years and have come to the firm conclusion that, for who knows why, button bucks urine is EXTREMELY effective for drawing in ANY deer. Mature buck, doe, or otherwise.

No idea why.

Also, estrous does work well and their hocks have a soured sweet smell to them that is very pungunt. THese seem to work well also.

I have also found that sometimes I get a huge amount of pee, other times none.

I too, have frozen and re-used it but not as effectively as fresh.

And it seems to work best during the chase phase of the rut.

Just my observations.

Thanks for the input everyone. There are some good ideas and I think that I will try my hand at some of them. I'll let everyone know what the results are.
