The keys to the right gate and a motion decoy. We use Mallard Master Pro's from Fowl Quest Outdoors, but I really like the look of the new mojo flock a flickers.

Is a mojo dove decoy OK to use for ducks?
 
I see it done a lot, and it does work. I like to have a timer for ducks. To me it seems to grab their attention a little better, maybe a little more flash.

Jerk rig is by far your best bet. Cheep easy and they have been fooling ducks for years. And you can get a couple quiver butts. They are pretty cheep and light. They put out good ripples
 
If you've got wind, a wind powered duck/dove won't add much weight. But on those still days with no ripple on the water a quiver butt or something similar will help out a lot. Jerk string is an option for creating ripples on the water, but you'll get tired of pulling on it, trying to call, and get gun ready all at the same time sometimes. Just not enough hands. Don't forget about weights to hold the decoys in place either. If there is not a lot of current, a 4-6oz egg sinker should be plenty. And if you can add a goose floater or 2 they are great confidence boosters for ducks. If you do go looking for a quiver butt of some sort, try to find one that runs on AA batteries instead of the cord attached battery packs. This is mainly for the weight concern of toting in the battery pack.
 
Agree with above jerk string on non windy days, Waders a call and also a 33 zebco with big treble hook it makes a decent retriever and don't eat or poop. lol

I built my jerkstring from some nylon twine, shock cord, and a couple trotline clips. You could save a little weight by staking it to the bottom instead of using an anchor.

We hunted .7 mi in today. I pack my waders in on long hauls like that.
