Ground hunting, slowly making my way to another spot when I jump a decent doe.
Tried stalking her to get a shot but lost her.
Anyone ever had success stalking after jumping one?

I say climb a tree after jumping one. I think they will generally come back.

In broken woodlots/farmland, I used to kill does quite often by bumping them from their beds. They'd usually circle downwind then stop to figure out what bumped them. Kind of a one man drive.

That's never worked for me in the woods though. They run and never stop, seems like.

I've only seen one place where I could do that and I still don't know why it worked there. When I hunted out of Holiday Tn the place had a lot of small rolling ridges. You could jump deer and they'd run over the ridge and stop. Walk over that ridge, jump them again, and they'd just run over the next ridge and stop again. I had that happen on numerous hunts there. Elsewise, everywhere else they ran for their lives.

I was reading I think was feild and stream complete guide to hunting and one of the chapters was about still hunting. There was some famous hunter in there they quoted saying that if you jump a deer and it's relatively close to you that you should run after it. He said a deer running isnt going to hear you running especially how far back you would be and will alot of the times stop as soon as it thinks it's out of your reach. I tried this on a buck one time. It did not work. I dont know how I would have been able to hold a rifle steady after all that running anyways. It is a fun joke between my brother in law and me. He will say he jumped a deer while walking in and the first thing I ask is did you chase after it.
 
Never worked for me personally in the woods.i make to much noise walking. I have seen them in food plots walking in and have gotten In position for a shot. When I'm in the woods I stick to trees. Good luck !
 
It's worked for me a few times , it worked this morning jumped a doe she ran around the hill then came back to see what jump her. When I jump them I just stand there, normally within 10 minutes they are trying to figure out what happened. I have found on farms with not a lot of pressure it works best.
 
There was a member on here by the name of bowriter. He suggested to me that you run at the deer. For those who remember him they will tell you this man was a very skilled woodsman. The principle behind it is to deceive the deer's instinct. The last thing a deer expects you to do is come charging at it. It doesn't want to start mindlessly sprinting until it exhausts itself and presents an opportunity for the predator to run it down. Instead it will often circle down wind and use its most reliable sense to confirm how it needs to handle the situation.

I have tried it and it has worked
 
Does usually don't go far. Just over a hill or far enough to get into thick stuff then turn around and see what bumped them. I'm not after does much so I've never attempted to get a shot on one like that but based I'd think sitting still and waiting for them to investigate seems like it'd be more successful than trying to sneak up on them.
 
I was walking to my stand-in the woods late one afternoon. Jumped a deer that ran but didn't scream. I stood perfectly still for a full minute then hit the can call twice. Waited another minute and took one step. Heard a deer in the leaves moving slowly. Looked over my shoulder and saw a decent buck walking back toward me. I managed to twist and shoot without moving my feet again.

I think he must have been dogging an unseen doe when I walked up, I was standing with some thick stuff behind me, I think the can call made him think of his lost love.
 
I have heard of hunters running to their stands during the rut so deer will think it is other deer running and not a threat sneaking through the woods. Kind of makes sense I guess, but I've never tried it. As for chasing a deer, that sounds silly but you never know.
