St Croix rods - what a rip off

I have a St Croix Premier spinning rod that I've had for less than 2 months. One of the eyes has chipped off, and it frays the line.

No big deal.. it's covered under warranty!

I contact St Croix to find out what to do.


1. You have to find your own box big enough to ship a 6.5ft 1-piece rod to them.

2. You pay FedEx $15 to ship it.

3. You include a check for $20 for St Croix to ship it back to you.



So it's going to cost me $35 to get a rod fixed that didn't even last 2 months... and I have to go find a box somewhere that I can ship the rod in.

I'm going back to Bass Pro to see if I can talk them in to replacing it. :mad:

If Bass Pro won't replace it, which they should, check around locally to get it fixed. It would probably be cheaper than $35 to replace an eye.

Dang I have Premiers and Avid's. Never had a problem with mine. It is actually really easy to replace an eye but I guess that's not the point. For that kind of money they should pay for the shipping.

Sounds like you chipped the ceramic insert and want to blame them for your accident.

You could always strip the damaged guide off and replace it with a new guide you tie on yourself. This would cost a few bucks and have it like new in no time.

Randy at murfreesboro outdoors has a guy that does great rod work. Only thing is, it is slow, but for sure quality work and pricing is more than reasonable.

Bass Pro has a 30 day warranty on anything that isn't their brand. The only exception is Shimano and Carrot Stick and a couple other brands (not sure which, but I know St.Croix wasn't included) have worked out their lifetime OTC warranty with BPS. They replace any rod BPS has to replace. With this being said, I'm sure BPS will work with you on this. They would rather keep you happy than lose a customer. At least it was like this when I worked there.

I never said it was their fault. I never said they made a crappy rod. I just said it was chipped. I do not know how it happened. It could have been a slightly damaged piece that slipped through their quality control. It could have gotten chipped by me somehow. It's covered by their warranty, so yes - I expect them to fix it. I was only complaining that it's going to cost me $35 to get it fixed (and the trouble of finding a box), which is 30% of what I paid for it. The company should be willing to at least pay for the shipping costs.

Preach on Nyper! Glad everything worked out for you. For what it is worth, my son broke a Dobyns Savvy Micro Series ( about $175.00) that he got in March. It just snapped about a foot from the tip. Dobyns Warranty = $60 replacement fee + $20 return shipping fee and what ever it cost you to package and ship it back to them.

+1 on the Pflueger! I wouldn't have bought the St Croix if I hadn't had a gift card to Bass Pro.

That being said, I do have upwards of 9 ugly stiks too. ;)

I have an Ugly Stik that is old. I know I had it in 1978, that's the year a gator tried to eat me while I was bass fishing.

Anyway, clear tip. Cork handle. It has been bent double from its owner being dumb and casting at sharks. A great rod.

I think I paid $79.00 for my flueger rod & reel from bass pro, I don't know if I could tell a difference between it & a $800 set up but my hats off to folks who can & can afford it, I do expect my stuff to last a decent amount of time .glad it was replaced. nothing wrong with having what you can afford so lets try to keep in mind we all don't have the same amount of extra $ to spend on our hobby's , there is nothing wrong with a $800 rod or a $100,the problem is company's know that you wont spend much to claim a warranty, if they paid shipping they'd be out of business PDQ

Wow.......I don't know what's worse. Spending $800 on a rod, or actually admitting on a public forum that you spent $800 on a rod. I would've showed you a good stand of bamboo for only $500...hahaha

It's ugly stiks or nothing for me. I'm harder on a fishing rod in one week of saltwater fishing, than most people are in 10 years. Never a problem.

i have thread, rod building epoxy and can buy eyes at academy, I wouldn't pay to get it fixed. But would probably just return it if I could, at that price... a $30 ugly stik might chip an eye or two after a few years, but just knock out the rest of the ceramic insert, it was only $30 and still works great.
