Squirrel Hunting in Bitter Cold?

Dunno....I didn't try it. I would say if they move they will be very close to their whole. I would think, that the evening hours when it is the warmest will be your best bet. Last weekend when it was semi cold they really didn't start moving until 10:00.

Like a rabbit hunter once told me, he didn't think the rabbits would run in bitter cold to conserve energy.

I think some of that may be true with rabbit hunting.

I may try it in the morning just to see and have a better opinion.

Do you hunt with dogs? Or are you talking about still hunting?

I was in the woods yesterday...no particular reason other than gettin away. Squirells were movin a little bit around 3:00. Get in the wodos tomorrow morning. I'll be out there. The temp is going to move up enough to make them more active I believe. My guess is from 9-11 am. Will be the best time. Late evening as already mentioned will be good. Find some nest and sit within shootin distance.

when is the rut...

end of November-December is the main rut......mid-may- early-June.....and sometimes not every year late august or early September(This year I believe had the 3rd breeding due to lots of food, in october I seen way to many 4" squirrels running around)....

the rut is over for now. shot one last weekend with 5 babies in it 3/4 developed.

by the way, I went this morning to see one squirrel stir, and it just ran across the road from me. No squirrels for me was stiring in this bitter cold. Tomorrow (sunday) evening, or monday morning will be your best chance of some great squirrel hunting.

I went back to my father-inlaws to burn some brush and he has lots of squirrels around his house. About 15 min till dark we seen one and usally we see alot.
they didn't stir all day for me....

I squirrel hunt a lot and have noticed they move during the heat of the day when it is especially cold
