I had a pretty good weekend this past weekend. We always go primitive camping on Labor Day weekend to fish and squirrel hunt. I have been going since I was 12 or 13. There are usually 20 to 30 people that go. Some of the retired guys will go down and stay for a week and half.

I wanted to take my soon to be 4 year old son for his first squirrel hunt and Labor Day camping trip. I went down without him on Thursday afternoon where I could get one good squirrel hunt by myself on Friday morning. I killed a limit fairly easily that morning. (didn't take time for pics)

My Dad brought him down after that, and he stayed on Friday night. He was excited about his first squirrel hunt. I just wanted to see a few and maybe kill one or two with him. I don't know how we did it, but we ended up with 9. It was a fairly easy place to walk, and I carried him on my back in some of the steeper places. I am just glad that there were a lot of squirrels there. He was ready to go so I didn't push him to try for the 10th one as he wanted to go back to camp. I think that he is hooked.

At the end. He didn't want to spread them all out (put them in a plastic bag to keep the blood off my vest) but wanted me to put the turkey feather in his hat that we found.

We left on Saturday afternoon as we took him to the White Co Fair to see the truck and tractor pull. He was wore out. This is him after we loaded the boat and headed out.

He had a good weekend and so did I!!

I didn't kill or see the first squirrel in a Hickory or Oak. All cutters were killed in either Beech or Maple. This may be my only two squirrel hunts prior to bow season as we are headed to Pigeon Forge this coming weekend, and then I am fishing the following weekend plus will be deer scouting as well. I may try to sneak another one in with him one morning though. Good times that I won't soon forget!

Thanks for the comments! I plan on getting him started right. I took him fishing a few times this past spring and summer. He loves it as well. He is already asking when he can go deer hunting. :D
