Spring vs F all planting for trees

I was reallsurprised today,the trees I planted a year ago were far behind the ones I planted in the fall.And,It was 100% on all of them.Spring plantings were all way behind ,examples....

My guess is that the trees planted the earliest have spent more energy on the root system and the newer ones spent their energy on foliage. I bet next year they will look the same. I am guessing mine did the same thing, matter of fact I know they have.

I did take two years of horticulture in High School.....of course I was stoned the whole time. :grin:

Supposedly Fall planted trees put more into developing a good root system and have better survival rates and growth initially in TN. I see Spring and Fall plantings matching each other though after a few growing seasons. I plant alot of bareroot in the Fall, potted stuff, shrubby stuff mostly in Spring though.

Fall planting gives them more time to establish more of a root system. I had to carry water to some i had planted in the spring, all my fall plantings did fine.

IF you water your spring planted trees regularly there should be no difference. the fall planted trees wont need the water.
