i don't know that backfired on me. i got a heck of a deal on a bushmaster carbon 15. was gonna sell it and make some cash. the wife claimed it for herself.

A compact simple to operate pistol & shotgun or carbine rifle
Not worried about hunting side, more of a feel good about being able be on the land for the new home site and protect herself and others if needed.

I have a Asshole for a neighbor thats causing problems, but will never come on to our land when anyone is around, he's now claiming to even own my land. But with a D6 running 5 days and 130+ dump truck loads of dirt coming and going he won't stop them or me when I'm on the land. But he's able to make claim and cloud my title to the land to delay construction loan, He really made a mistake when he pissed my wife off, trust me I know.lol

my wife has small hands and cannot work the action of an auto loader so the one i picked up for a great deal had to be sold and i had to buy a revolver. she loves it. S&W airlight 38

Mine has a model 36...revolvers are great for women like my wife who haven't shot much and aren't intersted in it but understand firearm safety.
She doesn't need to know how to clear a malfunction or operate as a stack when clearing a room...she needs to know she has five shots in her small revolver and if it clicks instead of goes bang one time just press the trigger again.
For a rifle...AR with a collapsible stock and a 'always on' non-battery powered red dot sight...

Handgun....+1 On the .38 J frame. Make sure she can handle the recoil. My wife has been shooting for some time and still has a flinch. She's getting better, but I wonder if she would have done better with a .22mag revolver.

As far as the long gun goes....870 20ga (12ga if she can handle recoil), small lightweight AR, and model 7 .223.

The 870 because most people under stress can't hit what they are shooting at. Some #4 buck helps with that.

The AR has light recoil and a good number of rounds.

The model 7 only because of the light recoil and it's easy to aim and shoot. A bolt gun would be my last choice, but it's better than nothing.

Depends entirely on what she wants the gun for, in my opinion. If she's looking for a handgun for self defense, you can't go wrong with a S&W J Frame. You can always get a 38 Special and look for reduced recoil rounds (or load your own, or buy from me ) for her to practice with and then load it with the "real" self defense rounds for when she would need them.

As for a shotgun, I have to agree with the 870 choice. If she's recoil sensitive, you can always buy her a 20ga. I've actually found that I enjoy a 20ga more when bird hunting or just shooting. They're typically lighter to carry and the recoil is reduced so you can shoot it more without wearing yourself out.

For a rifle, it's a completely utilitarian choice from my standpoint. For plinking, I would definitely recommend a Ruger 10/22. Ruger has a great warranty, the guns are inexpensive to buy and shoot, and there are tons of aftermarket accessories. For medium-large game, I would recommend a bolt action 243 or 270. However, because the bullet weights will be a little lower, shot placement is more important.

There are way too many different rifle configurations to go over here, but I'm sure you see the point.
