I do not know if it is purely a marketing ploy to sell more primers.

I do know the Federal 215M was developed by Weatherby and Federal to light off the 80+ grains of IMR7828 used in the 300 Weatherby Mag.

Some hand load folks insist that any powder charge greater than 60 grains should be lit by a magnum primer.

I have loaded both 210M and 215M into 300 WinMag brass and fired them in dark rooms in an attempt to determine if differences exist. IMHO the 215M primers produce a much larger and more intense flame than their 210M brother.

I have noticed that some bench rest folks use small rifle primers in the 6MM+ family. I am not clear on the "why" but it certainly works extremely well.

I happen to use Fed Premium Small Rifle in my 223 but you'll see regular small rifle and the CCI ones that are for AR's.

If I don't see the 215M's soon I will have to step down to another brand and perhaps in my 300WSM go right to the 210M level. I will then have EXACT FPS and accuracy results to compare apples to apples.
 
Do post up the results when you can Dave, very interested to know. Right now I'm just getting started on some WSM loads myself, and I'm only using Rem LR primers that I have on hand. I'd like to be able to make use of them with this rifle, but not sure what load I'm even going to end up with yet as I still have to shoot a ladder and see where to start.
 
The biggest issue I have seen has been in very cold conditions. Not sure where the drop off occurs though. But with my 7mag it shoots fed210 just fine, but shooting a slow powder such as IMR7828 or H1000 with 210s and groups go south pretty quickly in fidgid temps. But with the 215m primer, my groups remained tight. This test we done about four years ago and it was -10 degrees. My buddy was going on a caribou hunt the next year. So we did our experiment in February. We just decided to stay with the 215's and not chance it.
 
Thanks buddy. I may get me some mag primers after all. No sense in taking a chance, even around here in these mild temps. :D
 
I will kick up a thread when I start the 300 WSM process.

I am going to try to make it work with 125 grain AccuBonds.

I may load up a few 180's and see what develops. I also have some 165's that my 308 cannot shoot . I also have some E-Tips that I need to be playing with.

shooting a 300RUM a few years ago doing load work in very cold with Retumbo and RL25 I had hangfires with both powders with Fed 210s and CCI 200 on same day shot .5 MOA groups with both powders using Fed 215 and CCI250 ,,with the magnum primers I had no hangfires and good accuracy but lost about 80 fps with both powders and primers from when it was 80*,,

I never tested the WM but the RUM in cold,less than 20*, can cause hangfires with standard primers,
 
Thanks Big. Looks like I need to err on the side of no hang fires. I can accept a little loss of speed, but a hang fire is totally not acceptable. I have plenty of 150 gr pills from my 30-06 stockpile to play with in the WSM, but ultimately look to develop a 165 gr recipe for it. The WinMag will be spitting 180 grainers.
 
I've always used only Federal 215's in my 460 Weatherby since most loads call for from 110 to over 120 grains of powder. If you don't need a magnum primer for that, then you don't need a magnum primer for anything. The next largest powder burner I have is the 257 Weatherby, which typically burns around 70 grains of powder. Since I already had a supply of 215's on hand, that's all I've ever used in it also. I have no other magnum rifles.

I HAVE had experience with hang fires though in the small primer powered 22 CHeetah mark II, which is a blown out 308 necked down to 224. You will get delayed firing with it as warm as 45 degrees. I don't like it when that happens! Since it's a varmint rifle, I just don't shoot it when the weather is cold or use cases formed from 243's which have large primer pockets.
