I am prepping my plots to plant for the fall. As many of you know I planted Eaglebean soybeans and the deer wiped them out. I know, I know. Next year I will have an electrical fence around them but the reason for the pic is to show the tonnage of these Soybeans. If you can plant them and secure them for a few months you are crazy not to plant them. These Soybeans are over 6 foot tall. They have beans growing on them and are looking VERY good. These will even make BSK think twice about bow hunting....well maybe I got a little excited.

Eagle Forage Soybeans are about as close to a food plot plant "magic bean" as you can get.

But if you don't have quite a few acres of food plot to plant them in, they will get wiped out in short order.

That looks awesome! I have similar size plots to alot of you guys on here. My biggest is probably a little under an acre. I might try and get some fencing in next year and take it down the week before season...that looks great!

some friends of mine always take cut hair and stuff it in panty-hose and hang them around the food plots and it keeps the deer out of the plots for about 8 weeks and that gives their plants time to establish themselves. just fyi.

Ive done a lot of reading on keeping them out of a "small"plot,what,if anything,have you heard about that works,which doesnt cost more than getting the plot cleared? :)

Nothing works to keep deer out of small plots. If those small plots contain the best food around, you won't be able to keep deer out.

How many acres do you think it would take planted to where the deer will not completely wipe them out? I can tell you from experience 1 acre is not enough :)

That would depend on your local habitat and deer density. How much of the acreage is good quality natural foods and ow much browse pressure is the local herd placing on those foods? If the rest of your property is mature hardwoods with no understory, I would guess it would take at least 5% of your acreage in soybean food plots to keep them from being wiped out. If you have lots of natural browse, you might be able to get away with only 2-3% of the property in soybean food plots.

As an example, I tried soybean food plots that made up 1% of a hardwood property with a measured deer density of only 12 deer per square mile. The soybeans never got beyond the early "two-leaf" stage. The deer wiped them all out.

I've watched deer jump electric fences like they weren't even there.
