Sope Question.

I am not an expert or do I even claim to know much at all. Recently I bought a new scope for my muzzleloader. I knew when I bought it I probably wouldn't get it on this year as close as it was to season. Anyway, now I am considering maybe putting it on something else and getting another scope for my muzzy. I see on here a lot of people use a 2-7x33 on muzzleloaders and other shorter range stuff. Is there an advantage to that as opposed to using a 3-9x40, or is it just personal preference?

I was educated on my the same thing sort of on my scope for 30-30 thread. When on low power they are quicker and easier to get target in scope,but have enough power to pick things up as far as your weapon can shoot. I was enquring about a 2x7x33 and encouraged to with a 1x3x20.(but thats ion a lever action).
You will get MUCH better answers but just helping to get the ball rolling.

i see no advantage of the 33 over the 40 myself, but im no expert. my 40's gather plenty of light well passed legal shooting time

The only advantage the 2-7x33 has over the 3-9x40 is size,weight and price as long as everything like brand and model are the same. Depending on the brand even that is negligable. I have had several of each and I'll take the 3-9x40 over the smaller scope any day. Especially as I get older and my eyes aren't what they used to be.

This probably will not help much but... It's personal preference.

The magnification ranges are almost to close to be a factor. ALMOST

In theory at 1000yds 7x will bring the image to the equivalent of 143 ft. 9x will bring the image in to 111 ft.

The objective lens size of 33 is going gather a little less light thana 40 but that's only comparing equivalent scopes.

A good quality 33mm objective lens is almost always going to be clearer and brighter than a cheap 40mm.

Of course then a 2-7x33 is going to be a more compact package also.

I like a 3-9x40 myself & thought it should gather more light. Size and weight doesn't really matter to me. I was just curious since a lot of folks seem to use a 2-7x33 or something like that.
