Im aware there are a lot of THP and Chamberlain haters but the video below as a lot of cool info on some of these studies in other states that have been ongoing. Whether you like them or not, numbers are numbers (im a statistic guy)

 
worst case watch starting at around the 38min mark. They are launching a new site (Turkey DNA) and are doing a hunter survey on odd plumage type birds. They will send you a kit for some DNA and then do some research on those type of birds. You will then get a certificate that tells you ALL the DNA data found on that bird.

Ive never killed an odd plumage type bird but man If I did and could get this info how awesome would that be.
 
and around the 45min (give or take) is them talking about a new gobbling study which I find fascinating when they start to get data back on it the next year or 2

Go down the rabbit hole if you want to turn your brain to jelly....

Turkey color phases are most likely similar to chicken colors and patterns.

To simplify it, there are probably at least 100 different genes responsible for colors, dilution of colors, amplification of colors, etc. Add another 50-100 genes responsible for pattern variations, etc.

But in short, most of the work is already done... remember, all the color phase domestic birds were originally developed from wild type colors/pattern.

the key is most likely. Seems there have just never been a study on it specific to turkeys. Again I just love biology and turkeys in general so I REALLY love learning more and seeing more data around stuff like this. Will it matter related to population or anything ground breaking? Most likely not...but Ill still love reading all about it either way.

Obviously some this wont peak any interest which I totally get, but odd stuff like this to me is fascinating.
