Snow goose hunting ?

Ok my son is dying to go on a Snow Goose hunt.
He asked me about it again yesterday, wondering how much an Arkansas license would be.
I told him that MO would probably be cheaper but I dunno.

I have heard from some people that just about any wheat farmer will let you hunt for free as long as you pick up all the dead birds.

Admittedly, I haven't looked up any of the regs or anything, figured it would be quicker to just ask here. LOL

The way I understand it, you can use electronic calls, no magazine restrictions, no limit, pretty much a free for all.
I have also heard of people just using walmart sacks for decoys.

Anyone ever went on one of these depredation hunts, or whatever you call them?

Not sure on Mo, but Arkansas does 3 conservation hunts. The first one was 10/11 - 11/12. The next two are 1/26 - 1/30 and then 2/2 - 4/25. Basically the need to kill a bunch of them. The rules for it are:

No bag limit or possession limit.

Hunters may use unplugged shotguns.
Hunters may use electric calls.
Shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset.
No federal or state waterfowl stamp is required.
Hunters must have a valid hunting license, but it may be from any state.
Hunters must call (800) 364-4263 (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) or click here to visit our permit page and click "Submit New Permit Application" for a free registration permit

I have a brother that farms 8K acres in Northeast ARK. He hate duck hunting, but does have a guy that guides off some of his land. If you want to go that route I can point you to him.

I will warn you though. Once you hunt Arkansas, you will never look at TN duck/goose hunting the same again.

Not having to buy license would make it easier to pay for a hotel for a couple days for sure. (if i understand what you said)

You are correct. I cut and paste off the Arkansas Game and fish. It can be any license from any state. I don't want to get in trouble for a advertising for them for free, so Ill PM you his website. He is a great guy and a champion goose caller. He played minor league baseball for a few years, but gave it up to duck hunt. He loves killing birds, but I like him because he is good with my boy. He talks with him and teaches him while in the pit. If you go with him I promise you will be back.

Our men's group at church has a group of about 20 of us that goes up every Feb. for a hunt. We drive over on Thurs, hunt all day Fri and Sat morning, then drive back Sat afternoon and usually stop in at Macks Prairie Wings on the way home.

We have been going to north east Arkansas for the past 7 years snow goose hunting. It awesome. We hunt with northern skies outfitters. They are a top notch guide service that puts you under the birds. We killed 98 last year in 2 days and 75 of them were in 1 day!

Went to Jonesboro, AR last Feb. We hit the nasty ice storm and only had 13 for the weekend. We had temps in the teens and got 6-8" of snow. Saw millions of ducks, the geese sat tight. Was a spectacular sight though!

Correct. It just went up last year and I have no idea why.....used to be $5
I have hunted both Ark and Mo. Do you work on a guide if that is the route you are gonna take, they are a dime a dozen and some have no bitness calling themselves a guide. Been there and done that.

My best hunt was in Ark with Goosebusters (Hoot Gibson) he is originally from around Paris I do believe, not sure if he is still in business or not.

Will be both us first snow goose hunt and we went with a highly recommended outfitter. Cost us a bit more than a do it yourself hunt but figured it was worth it in the long run. They run 1,800 to 2,000 decoys and their own brand of e-callers, hunting out of layout blinds. I have started packing stuff already.

Never been to Arkansas, but hunted in MO twice. I can tell you it's a lot easier with guide. My first hunt we killed a total of about 90 birds in two days, but that was with a large guide outfit and the high field the first day (us) gets the low field the second day. Last year we used an independent guide - he moves with the birds - and killed 95 the first 4 hours! The weather got nasty the second day and the birds quit flying. The guys I went with went back a couple weeks later and tripled our numbers in two days. Heading back on the 31st and I can't wait. I don't even hunt waterfowl around here. East Tennessee is awful for ducks and geese.

We wer around Sikeston, MO on opening weekend - maybe same time you were in Arkansas. Came a snow storm our second day and had about 8" the next morning when we had to leave. Tough travelling! That weather put a stop to the snow geese flying, too. Was still a good trip.

They eat just fine !! Alot of people will make jerky out of them also.
Ruger is there a Tndeer snow goose hunt in the works ? I am game if its a weekend that I am off ! Ark or Mo works for me.

Marinate chunks in Montreal seasoning overnight and skewer with kabob veggies and grill 'em! Tastes like beef kabobs.

I treat them the same as you would a duck breast, the younger Snows are more tender then a duck with better flavor then a mallard in my opinion. The older ones taste good there just a little more tough. A few whacks with a meat mallet takes care of that though.

Make jalapeno poppers out of them. Cut you a bite size chunk, butterfly it lay in a mixture of cream cheese and jalapeno, wrap in bacon(peg it in place with a tooth pick). We broil them until almost done, and then finish on a hot charcoal grill with some hickory chips to add some flavor about 5 minutes a side.

That would be a pretty good idea if we can all get on the same page for a weekend.
I haven't called the guy for a price yet.
He might give us a deal if we had a pretty large group that wanted to go.
