Smoker Pan!

Bought a smoker Pan for my gas grill and wood chips.Do you place smoker Pan directly on flame or just on the grill?

Either location would probably work. Right over the flame would get the steam rolling best.

In my gas smoker it is located about 6 inches above the burner.

I felt like such a moron when I finally realized this. I had been doing it for years and the same thought dawned on me.

I figured they would burn slower and make more smoke over a longer time being soaked.

Nope, they just steam @ 212°F until they're dry, then the temperature rises until they smolder. All you're doing is delaying the smolder
