For all the Smokeless vets,what kind of 209 primer is best? Plan on shooting 250 gr Hornady's and 50 gr of 4198. I have some standard Winchester 209 primers ,but have read alot of folks saying they use magnum primers.
 
Federal 209A is the hottest (that I know of). CCI 209M magnum primers are probably next in line. What are you shooting it out of?
 
I don't see a lot of difference in the Fed 209A and the CCIM. I use both along with Win 209. Some powders get stubborn at lower temps, but I've never had a misfire with any of them. Barrel/sabot fit and loading pressure would be my main concern unless you hunt in the single digits regularly.

With BH209 I always use the Magnums.
 
Which 4198? IMR or H?

Some say H4198 is temp sensitive, I've never experienced it though.

IMR4198 is harder to meter, but is supposed to be more temp stable.

If really worried about it, you can duplex.
 
I'm shooting a Remington conversion with 45 cal 25 in McGowen barrel. H4198 powder.Just didn't want to have any hang fire problems. I will be hunting here in TN so I don't anticipate any real low temps. I guess I will try find some Federal primers,but if unsuccessful will the Winchesters work?
 
Mine works fine with the Winchesters, but there are people that have reported mis and hangfires with H4198 and low temps or wet conditions. I think I'm going to use a duplex this year just to not have it in the back of my mind. I have the same setup as you.

Had a couple misfires with the h4198 2 yrs ago so i switched to the mag primers plus i added 10 gr or n110 under the 4198 problem fixed Do some research and you will find people have had the same problems in cold weather with the h4198

Duplexing helps with ignition issues and usually increases muzzle velocity. What were the conditions you had misfires in? Only misfire I've ever had with H4198 was with non magnum primers and a VERY dirty breech plug.
 
I read somewher IMR 4198 was supposed to ignite better than H4198 but harder to scale. Havent had enough experience to know if that is true or not.

That would be a fair assessment, but if you are weighing each charge by hand it is a non-issue.
