SMOKELESS IN A REGULAR MZLOADER

I have a friend that says that a guy he works with has found a combination to shoot smokless out of his omega. He shot it and said he could shoot out to 300 yards. He killed a doe at 250 and said it was a complete pass thru. Said it doesnt hurt the barrel. What do yall think ever heard of it

Modern blackpowder barrels ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR SMOKELESS POWDER. You might find a "low power" load that will work for a while but, and hear it comes, the steel in the barrel will gradually weaken and fail under the added pressures associated with using smokeless powder. Theres a resason the barrel is marked "black powder only" Don't follow a fool over a cliff !!!!

You did read it, he mentioned converting a Model 700 over. unless it is 50 cal already......................which I doubt.

I have never heard of such a thing, so I let it slide.

there is a gunsmith that converts a handi rifle to smokeless mz. i dont know if he can an omega though. if its a stock barrel, i wouldnt stand next to him when he shoots it!!

I can't believe you guys have'nt heard about smokeless Muzzleloading. Take a look at the savage ML. Its made to shoot smokeless powder. And changing the 700 ML to a smokeless is a matter of changing breech plugs and barrels for a start.

We are all aware of the Savage smokeless ML, the thread is about someone shooting their Non-smokeless ML using smokeless powder.

actually you can have a custom with a savage, and you can do most of it yourself. the trend now is using speer sp bullets in a fast twist barrel, or sabotless.

What caliber are you going for with this "conversion"? Are you rebarreling the weapon? What is involved?

I am not buying another ML.
Just gathering info for a build. Forget which website had some details.
I know a guy in NC that did a conversion.
He shoots 1" groups at 200 yds with a 300gr bullet.

Why not? I did. It was relatively simple. I am shooting a .40 cal built off a 10ml2 action.

That being said, a good gunsmith can build you a muzzleloader off any action you desire-

Very interesting indeed. I saw one of those barrels many, many years ago at a gun show and didn't know what it was. My first intuition was that it was something a machinist had done to see if it could be done. It appeared to have been built on a rifled shotgun barrel blank. It says these folks do custom conversions on several different firearm models.

I have had a Savage ML II for 5 years now and love it. It's effective, accurate, functional and user friendly, over all IMHO it's a hard gun to beat, but me thinks a smokeless ML built on a Ruger #1 frame would be cooler than the back side of the pillow.

Must resist the temptation of e-mailing an inquiry on a custom built on a #1 frame, must resist....

I know 'cause I've said the same thing on numerous occasions. That primitive weapons NWR hunt that Deer Assassin posted about flung a craving on me for a traditional ML. I bought two in less than a week, cut the lead weights off some of my goose decoys and melted them down in a small iron pot on my Coleman stove and cast them into shot. Been sneaking through the woods the last couple of days with a reproduction .45 long rifle in my hands, bagging a doe with it on Monday. This evening I was posted over a food plot where the longest shot would only be 75 yards with a .50 cal Hawken with a bullet and powder charge heavy enough to bowl over a small Jersey bull. Yesterday I went into a fabric store to inquire as to whether or not they had any "pillow ticking," They did, I bought a yard of each thickness. I have a butter bucket in the freezer right now with chunks of deer fat in it from my most recent kills waiting to be rendered down into tallow for leather dressing and bullet and patch lube. Presently in negotiations with another boy I hunt with for a .36 cal squirrel rifle, wanted one of those since I was 12, and most recently I've been on a mission to find and scavenge scrap lead to cast into ingots for future bullet and round ball material.


I'm holding DA responsible.

Go check any local tire store, they pull the old weights off and most of the time can't reuse them. They usually throw them away.

talked to him today and ask how much powder he was shooting and he said 44 grains. I told him i still wouldnt shoot it.
