Smoked Gator

Anyone ever bbq or smoked a gator? Son is wanting to try it in a month or so. Found place to buy one about 2-3 ft long
Any recipes for cooking it whole?

Not worth it. Alligator fat is disgusting.

Best to skin, debone and carefully trim away every bit of fat before cooking.

If you are using the tail, cut the blood line out of the center. Gator is like some fish that has the line.

Ordered some online nice clean filets, 1 pound packs, they also sold whole, ready to cook and other ways.
Grilled, smoked, deep fried maybe it was the cook but I wasn't impressed with any of it. Definitely not worth the cost.

to be honest i thought gator would be good after watching swamp people scarf them up. definately didnt care for it much but it was free.

I've only ever had it fried. I like it. It must be in the preparation from start to finish. Like venison. Needs proper care from kill to table.

Now what I haven't had is turtle. I'm really wanting to try that.

Well he smoked one. The tail was very good. Rest i didn't care for. He said next time he might just get the tail or some filets

The fried tail nuggets that used to be served in the basspro restaurant were delicious, especially with that green dipping sauce.
