Go to Potters Ford and the next crossing down the road( I think thats Daddy's Creek) and throw a small Rebel crawdad. I assume you know where that is in being in Catoosa. My Dad and
I used to do that every year on a camping trip over there and catch quite a few, catch redeye the same way too.
 
Creeks I use a zoom lizard (green pumpkin, watermelon seed, junebug, watermelon red flake) or a weightless zoom super fluke (white, pearl or similar) twitched erratically. Eddies and pools as pockets of water around riffles are where smallies like to hide waiting to ambush baitfish coming from the riffles. In long slow stretches of water with rocky bottom, they sometimes are cruising through looking for stuff like crawfish. Soft plastic cares are good too. Watermelon seed and green pumpkin are 2 very good colors. Lizards and crawfish I rig on a hook with a couple split shot about a foot up the line, just enough to get it to the bottom.
 
If you really want some fun then bring a cast net and catch bait in the riffles and keep them in a frabil minnow bucket tied to a rope so you can drag in water as you wade. Free line a live minnow, that has caught many smallmouth, sometimes instantly.
 
I second catman's advice, although I would also add that a seine (or some spare time, preferably with a young kid) to catch crawdads can be really fun in itself. Plus, it's hard to beat those guys for light tackle smallmouth bait.

Lots of folks use line that is too heavy for smallmouth. The water is generally clearer and they have decent eyesight, so be sure to avoid that heavy line. Others might have differing opinions, but I would use 8-lb fluorocarbon most of the time.

I'm sure they can be caught at any time just like all the other small rivers/creeks around here but I've only fished over there in the Summer when warm enough to wet wade. Never felt like hauling my kayak over there any other time of year since we have so many great streams closer to home.
