This summer we purchased a house on 6 acres. It is 95% wooded and I have been seeing quiet a few deer. There is section where the builder did a little bit of clearing (I think he wanted to put 2 houses on the lot but was unable to do so). There is decent light penetration to the forest floor. I am thinking that over this winter/spring to prepare an area for a small food plot between half and full acre. Just something to get deer to stop at between the near by fields and their beds on the adjoining property.

I am thinking of dropping a few of these trees to open up some sun light and to then push the debris up on the edges rather than haul off and burn. Is this the best plan to improve habitat and draw deer in?

I have already submitted a soil sample so I know what I'm up against as far as PH and fertilizer needs.

looks like u need a little more sunlight in there.....i'd open it up a bit...but by all means take advantage of the situation....food plots are a good thing!
 
I put in a bag of bow stand with lime on Oct 6th. Its starting to come in but this is just an experiment year. I have been debating opening it up a bit over the winter but I'm worried to do too much and make it a less attractive area.
 
I had one spot that started out like yours 10x10yds, and another just a little bigger. 15x25yds.
Picked those as they were naturally more open than surrounding hardwoods. Select cuts the trees and used the brush to shore up the edges to make openings where I wanted in relation to stand site. Had a couple of large overhanging limbs that I took out to make room for more light. It is surprising how much difference a few trees make. The biggest PITA is doing everything by hand, as it is impossible to get equipment in there.
Just used a bag of throw and grow stuff, a mix of everything.
The deer have been on them every single day. They keep it cropped down pretty good, almost too much. Makes me wonder how their normal food sources are doing. This is the smaller plot.

I checked mine over the weekend, its growing good but they are starting to hammer it; basically eating dirt to chew the sprouts off.

Same here.
What does that mean, they aren't getting enough other browse or they just like plot greens better?
Now I know why people fence theirs off until it has grown some.
 
they will tear it up especially if there are little to no agriculture fields around..... i have about 1.5 acres planted between two plots and road edging and its all i can do to keep them from destroying it before season .......
