Slug Hunters...What ammo?

I have an H&R Ultra Slug Hunter in 20ga. I like shooting Hornady SSTs as they are extremely accurate. I'm comfortable taking 100+ yard shots. My problem however is that I end up having to walk and track game for long distances. The first doe I shot with it...I shot at ~80 yards. Luckily it didn't know where the shot came from and ended up running directly to me before dropping to the ground. The 2nd doe I shot, I hit at ~60 yards. Although I hit this deer in the vital area, I had to track it for almost a day. Ended up finding it 3/4 mile from where I shot it. This past weekend, I had to take out 2 stray non-collared dogs who were running deer on our property (I hated to do it but that's another story for another day). Anyhow, I hit both dogs and both ran off. Ended up finding 1 of 'em about 100 yards away and never found the other.

Is this to be expected with slugs or is there a better choice?

Mine loves the Remington Solid copper sabots, but I don't think they are available anymore. I bought @ 10 boxes before they discontinued them.

I have also had amazing results with the Brenneke rifled slugs(heavy field short magnum) They shoot equally well in a rifled or smooth barrel gun. It is all I use in my Rem 11-87 premiere with a Hastings barrel.

PS: I would definitely find a better ammo if you have the above listed results with the SST's.

I have the same gun. Mine loves lightfields. Always left a huge hole. Never run far if they even run.

I have found the 2 3/4" to be more than adequate with much less unneeded recoil. Also, more accurate do to less recoil.

My buddy has the same rifle in 20 and 12. They both like partition gold and he shoots them a lot.
I only use partition gold out of 1100 and they only go as far as the momentum takes them after the shot.

I use remington accu-tips in my Savage 220 20ga slug gun. They are bonded, accurate, and are proven killers.

have been thinking about getting a new gun(I have the savage 12ga)was wondering if you have any feeding issues with the 220.tired of the cycling issues with the 12 plus its a bear to load

Tried a box of Remingtons Aero Tip 12ga 3in. a couple years ago.Dont let the 3in scare you.Shoots good in my 1187 and the kick isnt any more than other 2 3/4 loads i have tried.
Plus they are more readily available than many other brands,
