I fired a bolt action shotgun. Once. Recoil like to killed me. I fired slugs in my Remington 1100 and am thinking that would be where I would head. An 1100 with a rfiled barrel. I have an 11-87 that I would not use.
 
870 with a pinned hastings barrel with a sightron SII 1.5-6x42 scope mounted to the receiver. Cloverleaf hastings 1 oz sabot slugs at 100 yds. Probably would not take a shot much over 120yds with it. Great gun but I am getting old and it is getting heavy. For brush busting and your typical TN hardwoods hunting where its hard to get a shot over 75 yds, its the perfect deer gun. I would go with the Savage 220 if I were hunting over agriculture where you get shots well past 100 yds and can not legally use a rifle. 12 ga slugs are not nearly as accurate as 20gs slugs at longer distances.
 
H & R Ultra Slug Hunter 20 gauge topped with a Nikon Slughunter 3-9X40 BDC 200 scope and loaded with Remington Accu-Tip 2 3/4" or 3" slugs. Its a tack driver out to 200 yards! :super:

I typically use my ML's for most draw hunts that require ML or shotgun. But, when I get a hankering for a quick backup shot, I carry my stainless Savage 220 slug gun. It is hard to beat.
 
220 is bad medicine... Rifle like accuracy. I've had H&R, Remington's with rifled and pinned barrels. While they shoot ok, none hold a candle to the 220.. It's worth the money for the trigger alone..
Tip: accu-tips are very accurate but when shooting deer you better lay off the shoulder or be a good tracker!!!

With all that being said, I agree with jerry smokeless is the way to go!!
 
Had a trigger job on my 1187. It doesn't shoot cloverleafs but will shoot 3in at 100yds and 5in at 150 yards with Remington Accutips. I really like the quick follow up if its needed.

My H&R slugger also likes the Accutips.
 
Unless ur restricted to slugs a 45/70 lever gun or a muzzleloader makes a better choice . I agree they get heavy

I have a Browning A-bolt 12 gauge with a 1.5- 4 X 30mm scope. It has a smooth barrel. I use it mainly to turkey hunt with an extra-full choke. I have killed deer with it with a rifled choke tube. Makes a BIG hole.
 
I'm with DA on this one for the most part. I only used slugs for the AEDC hunts until they started allowing ML's. Without hesitation I got a ML - not smokeless though.
 
For the longest I used a crown grade Mossberg 835 with a scoped 24" cantlevered rifled barrel, 32 pro-ports in the top of the barrel helped with recoil- muzzle rise and made a interesting display in low light condition.

The biggest down side I have with the Mossie is that typical forearm rattle that 835's seem to be particular to developing, accuracy was excellent; better than some centerfires that I've owned,

I was in the process of setting up my duck gun, Browning Gold 3.5 with a cantlevered slug barrel when I found a good deal on an 20ga H&R ultra slug gun.
Both of those projects have been kind of put on the back burner.

Having both a smokeless ML and a dedicated slug gun I look at them as completely different tools.
Public land or a quota hunt where there are multiple hunters in the woods, where the shots are less than 150yds and the potential need for a back up or anchoring shot exists I'll take the slug gun.
