Slug Gun

I hunt some corp land a couple times each year and normally use my muzzleloader but have decided to buy a slug gun hopefully without breaking the bank. I've looked at the Savage model 220 (I think that's right) that's a bolt action but haven't seen one in person. Any thoughts on it or other slug guns I ought to look at? Would love to find one in a pawn shop in decent shape but not sure how realistic that is around here.

I have on I might let go. It hasn't been shot very much at all. I have just bought an a-bolt slug gun. It has leupold bases and rings on it. If you make me an acceptable offer I will donate the 5 dollars just like in the classifieds. It is a sweet shooting gun and less recoil than the 12ga.

I've thought about the H&R's but believe I want more than a single shot. If I went that route I'd probably just buy another barrel for my encore.

More than likely I will not go the single shot route but if I did I'd just buy a barrel for my encore. We do some deer drives in thick stuff so you can fire more than once at moving deer. Saw a guy empty his last year and had 2 deer to show for 3 shots.

Okay I've basically narrowed it down to a Savage model 220 or a Remington 870 Express Slug. Both in 20 gauge. Anybody have experience with them? Thoughts either way? I can't find a Savage anywhere around here to handle.

Daddy and my Little Brother both bought the Savage Bolt action 20 gauge shotguns for the Ill. hunt,they will both shoot less than 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards,,lined up about an inch and half high at 100 they are good to 150 and with a range finder I wouldnt be afraid to try it at 200 but you would need to know the exact range out that far..

Daddy has some kind of shotgun/mzl Leupold scope on his..

he shot it two times today,,hit a one inch dot at 100 with the center crosshair,then hit another one inch dot at 150 holding on the first hash mark below center in the scope,,,,he put it down and said that was all he needed to see from it,

I kinda hate to tell this,but call BS if you like but my older brother hit a 24x24 target with it at 300 yards,

H&R Ultra great shooters, they don't shoot well with the super fast slugs, but with Rem buckhammers and hybreds they touch holes at 100yds. FYI if you send it back to H&R to have another bbl fitted they will do a free trigger job, also if u buy a rifle they will fit a shotgun bbl but they won't fit a rifle bbl to a shot gun.

The probability that you will find a savage 220 around here to handle is pretty slim. Slug guns are not popular enough in TN for gun dealers to carry seeing as its not a slug only state. I personally think that a slug gun is one of the best TN deer hunting weapons you can have but I hunt hardwoods where a shot over 50 yds is rare.

You need to consider the terrain you are hunting. Does the Corp property have wide open fields where you can take a shot over 100 yds. Are you going to be hunting over them or are you going to be back in the hardwoods. You don't need to spend the money on a 220 unless your average shot is going to be 100 yds or more. A 220 with a half way descent scope is going to run you $700. A shotgun with a rifled cantelvered barrel will get you out to 80 yds or so. With the right slugs and the proper amount of practice will get you 100 yds, maybe a little further. An H&R can get you out to 150yds but thats with allot of practice with the right slugs. Some people have gotten bad shooters. There have been people on here that have posted about having a hard time getting their H&R to shoot well. There is something about those break open single shots that sometimes just won't shoot. I have read on other sites about people having issues with H&R's, Rossi's, and even Encores.

Slug guns are not like rifles. You aren't going to just buy one and a box of shells, sight it in and be ready for season. You will need to buy at least 3 or 4 boxes of different slugs in different weights and speeds to figure out which works best with you slug gun, especially if you think that you are going to take shots out to and beyond 100 yds.

Ive got a rem 870 in 20ga. It shoots 3" groups at 100yds with Hornady SST's. Missed a nice buck with it last year at 40 yards...didnt hold the barrel end tight.

For deer drives with the possibility of multiple deer would warrant the 870 over the Savage for sure. With the bolt gun you don't have a huge advantage over the single gun compared to the slide action of the Remy.
