Slug choices

I'll be picking up a Mossberg 500 20-gauge with rifled barrel in the next day or two once it arrives and am wondering what slugs I should try in them. This is my first slug gun so I have no idea where to start. I did see some Hornady SST's the other week that I thought about trying. Anyone ever shoot any out of this gun? If not give me some opinions on slugs to try.

Wasnt a Mossberg 500, but a Rem870 using SST's. 2 rounds into the boiler room but neither round came out the other side. I recovered one round just under the skin on the opposite shoulder, full expansion and only one petal broken off. Both shots were approx 80 yards. One round went through the close shoulder and prolly hung up in the opposite shoulder, deer ran about 20 yards and stood for about 5 minutes, then laid down for about 10 minutes before getting back up. After getting back up, the second round entered just behind the rib cage (quartering away), and was recovered just under the skin in the opposite front shoulder, pile up about 30 yards later. Had zero blood where he was standing and laying and no blood trail that I could find following the second shot, chest cavity was full of blood.

Slug guns are a finicky creatures, I have 4 seperate set-ups and shoot 3 different brands of slugs out of them to get my best results from each rig.

I was most impressed with the accuracy and knock down power from the Brenneke (heavy field short magnum)

The best thing to do is buy different brands of slugs to see which your barrel likes. I bought a slug barrel for my 11-87 a few years ago and spend half a day shooting about twenty boxes of slugs. I found the 3 inch Brennke slug was most accurante in my shotgun, but I developed the mother of all flinches which took a while to get over. :blush:

Picked it up today and now to shoot some slugs. Guess I'll start with the Brennekes since that's received the most recommendations. Thanks guys and keep 'em coming if you've had good luck with others that would be worth looking at.
