Slider Fishin'

I'll be taking the family to Pickwick, Wednesday - Saturday, this week for a little get away. At least once a day, I'll be sneaking off by myself for a little fishing from my kayak.

My in-laws own a lake front lot on the north side of the reservoir, across from Pickwick Landing state park and up Bluff Creek. I'll be fishing there and inside the state park.

I'm just looking to catch fish although catching some smallmouth would be really nice.

Any tips for using a slider on Pickwick? Worms or grubs, colors, type of jig head? General slider advice?

I use a 1/8 oz. snagless slider head on 6 lb. line. Bait it with a 4" zoom dead ringer worm in either green pumpkin or watermelon seed. I also dye just the tail in chartruese. Fish it slowly drug on the bottom with pauses as you go. I have caught countless number of smallmouth and largemouth on it...and not just small fish either.

Are you set on using a Slider? If not I would buy some 1/8 or 3/16 oz. Ownner shakeyhead jigs and a few packs of Zoom Tricks worms in Watermelon Red and Green Pumpkin. Drag them on the bottom and you can catch all the fish you want right now down there.

Sliders, nomatter what water:

1/8 with brown or chartreuse 3-4 inch sliders.

(1) You fish them very slowly.
(2) cast as far as you can and let sink to bottom.
(3) Raise rodtip slightly, turn reel handle a couple times slowly, let sink, repeat.
(4) if you feel a tap, set hook immediately with short, sharp set.
(5) Fish very slowly.

Best around wood in deeper water and dropoffs from shallow to medium depth.
