Slate Call Question

Lost the striker to my slate call. So I bought a cheap Bass Pro glass call with a striker. Do I have to rough up the glass to get any sound? I strike it, but absolutely no sound at all. Yea, I know. Bass Pro and cheap usually means junk. Slate calls are not my go-to call, but I do carry one with me.

I think it's more than a slate.

I have to actually scratch it pretty aggressively with sandpaper to get it to sound right.

Yes, you will either need a stone or 80 grit sandpaper for the initial rough spot. Generally, you only use a scotch brite pad for slate calls.

I lost 3 strikers in one day last year, so purchased 20 used strikers off a guy on Ebay. Painful lesson!

I have an old hs strut tripple glass all it has ever had on it is a scotch brite pad and its pure turkey

Condition it with the cloth used to sand drywall. Don't know what it's called.

I use one of these on my glass and crystal calls. After it's roughed up with the stone 90% of the time I just use a maroon scotch Brite on the surface and a green on my striker tips and I am good to go.
