Anybody ever deer hunt with one? I was thinking about putting my little brother behind it on the juvy hunt. Shots will be within 50 yards.

I have several Comm block rifles I have considered hunting with. Mosin Type 53, M44 Izhevsk and a Type 56 SKS. They are all straight shooters and I'd be fine within 100 yards with any one of them. Go for it. Be sure to get soft tips or hollow points.

My brother in law killed a couple with his SKS several years ago. I had a Type 56 but, never hunted with it. I've thought about trying my Izhevsk M44 Mosin Nagant. I think them little rifles are beasts. csi-tech you opened a new can of worms. :super:

I wouldn't think your basic Wolf hollow points will fill the bill. The caliber, fine for medium game. My Yugo SKS would be a bit heavy but, I wouldn't think twice about shooting a deer with it.

Wichester makes powerpoints in that caliber. I think i will go ahead and try it

Keep in mind SKS are .311 diameter and the Win stuff is .308 for the Ruger Mini 30 which is also a .308 diameter bore.

Not saying they won't work, they will. Accuracy might suffer.

NP.

As far as I know unless the recipes have changed over the years the offerings from Win Rem and Fed have all been .308 diameter bullets.

All Wolf and Norinco ammo that I know of comes with 7.92 or .311 diameter bullets to match the bore demotions of the SKS and AK -47 series of riffles.

The Ruger Mini Thirty , the Ruger M77 and most of the AR Clones all come with .308 barrels.

I would be more concerned about shooting .311 down a .308 bore than I would be shooting .308 down a .311 bore.

Thats kind of what I was thinking too. I've shot plenty of the wolf. It never gave me aby trouble, but I've never tried to kill anything with it either. I'm reluctant to trust the cheap stuff. I can't imagine that accuracy will suffer much at 50 yards with the Winchester stuff. I'm choosing the sks because I don't think he could be accurate with his other options. Now that I know he is interested, I'll have all next year to get him set up with something else.

Yeah just shoot it and see . My son is talking about going out and trying some of the wolf hollow points out in his SKS on some does since he is tagged out .

I'd be interested to see the results

It may be around Christmas before he gets out with it . He has a brand new shiny 45/70 guide gun and Leupold Hog scope he wants to wear out a hog with first . Then he plans on going after the does with the SKS. He says after the SKS he plans on taking out his Mossin Nagant and field testing it . So I guess one good by product of the 2 buck limit it makes one pull out stuff from the back of the safe that normally would not get hunted with .

My only issue would be that with my normal rifle 350 yards is a cakewalk. With one of my Military surplus guns I'd have to hunt where my maximum shot would be 100 yards and in.

I shot a doe in the neck a few years back with an AK, dropped her of course. I was using wolf HP ammo like you mentioned, it did just fine. I wasnt to sure about how the bullet was going to expand and all that jazz so I just went with a neck shot. Dropper her where she stood. For the most part entry and exit wound looked like the bullet did very little expansion.

I would say your main concern would be getting some good quality hunting ammo. The wolf HP worked fine for me, but again I cant really tell you what It would do if you shot a big bruiser right behind the shoulder.

Wolf makes some ammo or did, that was loaded with a 154 gr. soft point. that should be some good stuff in a SKS or AK47.

Yeah that would be a good load over the hollow points.
