Single Shot 30-30

I read on here a while back about someone (DA I think) was using a Handi rifle and loading Spitzer bullets for the 30-30.

I'm trying that now and running into some throat length problems.

If anyone can offer some help I'd appreciate it.

Only way I can load the spitzer style is to sink the bullet way down in the brass, which somewhat kills the advantage of the single shot.

I believe DA was using the 125 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.

The light bullets should work fine. Are you trying to hold to a certain oal? In a single shot the throat length should be the limiting factor. Will a 'normal' seated 125g not load into the chamber? The regular 30-30 bullets have a stubby profile and most of the bullet is in the neck. I have run into that problem with 30-30 repeaters being limited by mag length. PH

Yep i had an old h& r single shot


loaded varget and 125 gn nbt i seated it .010 off the lands

killed a few with it I sold it to carlos viagra i think

killed at 130yds and 180yds and 279yds with it

are you loading it for a single shot or lever action


if it is a single shot it should have a long enough throat to seat the bullets out

Its a single shot.

And it seems to shoot ok (no high pressure signs) although I haven't shot it much.

If the bullet is seated as it would be in something like a .308 (bullet out of the brass somewhat), it won't chamber at all.

Seated very deep in the brass it will chamber, just doesn't look right, thought I was missing something or had a really short throat on this rifle.

I load em in my handy but it has a long throat Even killed a deer with em.

DA, The loads I've tried have to be loaded deeper than the one in the picture to chamber. (at least with the Sierra 125s)

With the Sierra 125 Pro Hunter its 2.650 to the lands.

I may need to ream the throat some.

You can trim the case neck so that it doesnt override the bullet ogive. Plenty of neck on a 30-30. PH

i am not familiar with the 125 pro hunter

but i think the 125 was 2.910 which was .010 off the lands in my rifle

u could ream the throat

DA, The measurement from your rifle helps alot.

I have access to some NBT 125s, I'll double check, but I'd say there won't be .250 difference.

Probably will be reaming a little.
