I have seen the side-imaging stuff on the water... and studied lots of screen grabs. It is very confusing to me... but it is like any tool. You have to learn how to use it before it can help you.
From what I've seen, there is a significant learning curve in transitioning from standard view to side-imaging. But those who have climbed the learning curve say they are great.
As for pros and cons between the two brands... I do not know. But most folks that I know have gone with the Lowrance.

They take some getting used to. They work very well if you know what you are doing.
I know a man down in Ga. that located a drowning victim a couple of years ago. Seems divers couldn't find him.

I have had the humminbid for three or four years. I love it. Once you figure out what you are looking at it's awesome. That takes some time. I have found a body and a truck with mine. Nothing can hide in the lake anymore with this technology. I haven't played with the lowrance model yet but a buddy just got one. Can't wait to see which is better.

I used the Humminbird 997SI for a couple years and it was very cool but I was never really able to apply it to more fish caught. Probably because of the topography and water clarity of the lake I mainly fish.
As far as electronics go, I've been alot more successful with the use of very detailed, accurate chart maps such as the Lake Insight on Lowrance's newer HDS stuff. They also now have the ability to shoot sidescan (StructureScan) which is something I plan to add on soon.
