sick deer - Hickman

[Buzzard Breath]

I was fishing in Lick Creek, along Lick Creek Rd in Hickman County today. I'd fished my way downstream and was coming back up when I notice a deer coming down to the creek. I stopped to watch it slide down the bank and realized something wasn't quite right. The deer was emanciated (sp) and was having a hard time getting up on its back legs. Once it got up, it just stood in the creek with its head down like it was drinking but I never actually noticed it drinking. After standing there like this for a few minutes, it noticed the swimmers at the bridge and looked up. A little later, it noticed me and when it looked at me, I could see its tongue hanging out like my dog on a hot day. It then did its best to run up the bank but wobbled on its hind legs the whole way. I did my best to get around it and let nature run its course in peace.

I sure hope it isn't what I think it might be.

I took some video, but not sure how to find it on my phone. Not sure how to post it if I do. It getting ready to storm, so I've got time to fool with it.

Let me see if this works. The video doesn't show much. Deer standing in creek. It actually looks lime it runs up the bank in pretty good shape, but you'll just have to trust me on it not being right.

havent heared of any ehd in the area,but i think i remember hearing that it happens all the time.but usually not as bad as or as wide spread as it was a few years ago.we got hit pretty hard with it then ,you could find deer dead in about any creek or river in the area.

Probably EHD. If anyone finds a live deer suspect of EHD be sure to call TWRAs regional office and report it. We can send the carcass in to confirm EHD but we have to get to it right away. If a carcass is a few hours old it is usually beyond testing.

BGG...when ehd was bad a few years back someone from TWRA spoke on here of Lewis County being hit real bad. I know its been a while, but do you think that area has recovered very well as of yet? WE hunt there quite a bit and still just don't see the numbers like we do in other Unit L counties.

That buck looked poor and I personally do not believe that deer would have stood for all that walking and commotion if he had been feeling up to snuff.
