Should the rifle/muzzleloader season be moved out of the peak rut time for Tennessee? Every state in the country that is considered a trophy state for the most part has short rifle season and it usually falls outside of peak rut times. Would like to hear all sides of the argument. Thoughts?

This chart speakes volumes for the management of states thst are considered trophy. They harvest far more 3.5 yr olds than most all other states and most the time their population is lower. Their trophy management is working.

I'd be in favor of a shorter season, a limit of one buck per person and a minimum of 8 points, but I know I'm in the minority. Too many "if it's brown, it's down" hunters.

I hunted for probably 10 years before I laid eyes on an 8 point in east TN.

Simply put no. Not everyone wants to limit themselves to forty yards during the best time to kill a good buck

How about; we don't use the state to manage for trophy bucks, but let individuals do that with their hunting properties if they so choose.
 
I like it the way it is, leave it alone.

I just love hunting and being in the woods. Why reduce our already limited season. It's working, I see pics of big deer all the time on here. I don't see that we have a problem and need to further restrict it myself. Just my opinion though.

I could go either way on this. I hunt Wisconsin during the gun season and towns shut down during deer gun up there. Everyone takes off of work and is in the woods. I don't hear many of the hunters complaining that the season is too short, but the orange army is out in full force for that short period of time. The rut is also more defined in some areas compared to what I have seen in Tennessee. Some parts of the state start in early November compared to where I am at it doesn't start till 3rd week in December. I think Tennessee offers hunters the ability to spend a lot of time pursuing deer with a gun, which is nice to be able to hunt with a gun form most of November and December. Tennessee has a much more liberal limit on how many does/bucks we can kill as well as more late season forage than some of our northern neighbors. With the world record buck coming form Tennessee, I could see our state becoming more of a destination for trophy bucks. This could be the time to see the debate for shortening the season to protect some of our younger class bucks, since we already reduced the limit from 3 to 2.

Why may I ask do we want tn to become a trophy state? Most of the eastern part of the state is mountainous and very difficult to kill deer in period, much less if you shorten the season. Why do I want, or does anybody want to start seeing tons of out of state hunters? Why should I be regulated to only kill what someone may consider a trophy? I usually stay out of these conversations but after the 2 buck limit already being imposed on me (and yes, it was forced on me and not for a biological reason but in order to please certain people) I'm not gonna sit back and keep accepting what other people want for their goals to be mine. If people want more big bucks then why not start turning in more poachers? I would almost out a dime to a dollar that more deer are poached in some counties than are killed legally. I personally know people who have been caught poaching and let off with less than a slap on the wrist but they still brag about killing 50 plus bucks a year and all of them by spotlighting. Why wouldn't We as hunters lobby for stiffer penalties for those caught? As always, most game laws only restrict the law abiding and adding more laws isn't changing anything until the ones in place are enforced and people are penalized.

By the end of the season I sometimes feel it's too long. If they shortened it somewhat I wouldn't complain although I don't advocate it either. Many of our bucks aren't killed until the tale end of the season while the rut is still active and the rut timing fluctuates so much statewide the seasons, as they are now, give everyone an opportunity to hunt the rut even if it is the second time around. I also think the 2 buck limit is a perfect balance between the 1 and 3 buck advocates. If I could change anything in the area I hunted it would be to reduce the doe kills. It has always been said fewer does makes for a for more intense rut and more sightings. From what I've seen and experienced that's 180 degrees away from being the truth. I've always seen more deer and more intense rutting action with more does in the herd.

I wouldn't mind if it opened 2 weeks later and closed 2 weeks later, mostly because it's flat miserable hot early season. I like the length of the season, and our limits. I don't think there should be statewide antler restrictions... Personally I try to let yearlings and 99% of 2.5's walk, but if someone else wants to legally harvest a spike or something that's their call, and I have no problem at all with it.

please take your bow and move to a state that has those regs,we don't need or want those rules,hunt with what weapon you want and don't hate on the rest ,get your self a state income tax too while your there :tu:

I think we should loosen some of the regs. Why should I be restricted in hunting time just because I can't afford a rifle, a muzzleloader, and a bow. On top of big bucks for the license to hunt. Last I looked, it was cheaper to hunt Ohio out of state than in state Tennessee.
 
I think Bow season is too long ... They get to start in September and go all the way to January ... Seems like y'all get first chance at any deer out there then want to restrict when I can use the weapon of my choice with the license I paid for with my hard earned money and then decide for me what is a trophy to me or my friends or the little kid I have taken hunting for his first time... GTFOH

I think it is perfect for all hunters.
Trophy hunters seem happy
Hunters that don't care what size buck they kill seem happy
And the hunters that like to shoot doe,s and their 2 bucks seems happy

So i see no need for a change

TN is a state of opportunity for all deer hunters, not a trophy state. Yet even with our regulations, we still pump out a LOT of giant bucks every year. I say we are doing great the way things are right now. I don't want to see TN caught up competing with other states. Higher lease prices and more crowded public land do not sound good to me.
