I have hunted 30 yrs with shotgun, we have restrictions in certain areas of NY that only allow shotgun.

I have 4 different slug guns and each one like a different brand of slug over and other.

Ithaca 37 featherlite - smooth bore, likes the remington folster styles the best. 2" groups at 100yds

Browning A5 - smooth bore, same results as above.

H&R slug gun w/heavy barrel - Rifled barrel,Remington solid copper sabots

Remington 11-87 premiere - Hastings rifled barrel, Brenneke heavy field magnum slugs.

I have literally spend hundreds of dollars, probably closer to a grand or more on slugs.

I have tried them all, brands and slug styles.

Everyone of these guns will print cloverleaf groups at 100 yds or better, the 11-87 has parted a deer ears at 152 yds. walking away from me.

All 4 guns a scoped with good optics.

I have an 870 with a hastings paradox slug barrel. The barrel is pinned and the scope is mounted to the receiver. I shoot hastings 2 3/4 magnum slugs. They cloverleaf at 50 yds and I get about 2 inch groupings at 100yds.

Every gun shoots every slug differently regardless of wheher it is the same make and model. The only way to find out which is the best is to go out and spend a bunch of money and try each one.

If you are shooting smooth bore, just shoot cheap foster slugs and get a saddle mount. If you have a rifled barrel and you don't want to spend an arm and a leg on slugs, try fiochis and brennekes. If you don't mind paying the money then get a wide variety of weights and speeds. Typically slower rate of twist barrels like slower slugs and faster rate of twist like the faster ones. My barrel has a 1:34 rate of twist and it likes slugs in the 1500 fps range like the hastings and lighfield hybrids far better than it does slugs in the 1900-2100 fps range like the hornadays and the lightfield commanders. Of course, you will find people with my exact setup who say that the hornadays, which I think are 2100 fps, work best in their guns. I was getting 6 inch groupings at 50yds with the hornadays.

I have a Remington 870 express with 20 inch Deer Rifle Sight smoothbore with fixed IC and it loves the Remington 'bulk pack' 15rds per box of the 2 3/4" 1 ounce slugger load. It doesn't shoot better than 4 inches from a steady bench at 100yds! It ALWAYS shoots into a paper plate at 75 yards and it lays the smack-down on Bambi! Basically a 'bang-flop' out to 75yds
