Shotgun Slug/Sabot use in TN?

Are there many areas in Tennessee that require straight walled rifle. black powder or shotgun (slug/sabot) use? I came from a shotgun only area when I moved here and still have a Hastings Paradox rifled barrel for remington 11-87. (12 guage, 2 3/4 and 3 in) Not sure if I should post in classifieds here or send to folks elsewhere for use or sale. Thanks in advance for advice. The only forum listings I see for shotgun are from 2014 and earlier. Not sure what changes have been made.

require - not that I am aware of... The Oak Ridge WMA has a zone you CAN use a shotgun in but you can also use a muzzleloader in the same place at the same time... Now there is also a push to allow straight wall cartridges during "muzzleloader" season or make one for it... did not pass last year but might in the future.

I have already reviewed this, thank you. I guess my question really, is if there is a lot of shotgun use for deer in TN or if folks are using black powder. Multiple areas where I previously hunted allowed black powder, straight walled rifle and shotgun in "shotgun areas". Some of those straight walled rifles were a bit overpowered since the reason was congestion/populated areas.Keeping my shotgun for turkey and using rifle for all else in east TN. Thanks for your information.

Fort Campbell gun season is muzzleloader and shotgun(slugs/sabots only) only for deer. At one time a lot of members hunted the Fort. I don't think there are many now. lol...

I think every Army post I ever hunted was shotgun only. For bird hunters- the most pheasants I have ever seen were in the Korean DMZ! Walking around like flocks of chickens or turkeys. I guess all the antipersonnel mines were weight based.

Understood. This is just a barrel with scope for a Remington 11-87. Gun went to a turkey hunter who did not want the barrel. I do not have an 11-87, just this Hastings Paradox rifled barrel.

I like having the choice to use any legal weapon and a slug is a deer stomper, have a rifled barrel for the mossy500, at 1 time tva property was shotgun only around eTn but think most folks shot the signs down with the proclamation at the entrances .

I grew up in a Shotgun only area. My winchester 1400 with slug barrel and remington copper solids had one shot kills at 140 yards. (but usually closer!) Lots of folks using the mossberg 500 with great success.

I take my Savage 220 to the stand often. It's not required. I just like it in spots where I won't be shooting over 125 yds.

Yes, for close situations, it's hard to beat a good accurate slug gun

Very few "shotgun only" opportunities across the State of TN, when looking at all of the opportunities afforded most hunters. I have a slug barrel for my 870 (owned it 30 years) and I own a Savage 220 slug gun and cannot tell you the last time I've shot either one of them. At least a decade ago. Shotguns with slugs have their place, but my smokeless MZer and rifle get the call 99.9% of the time here in TN.

We hunt with Savage 220 a lot. I will grab it over the smokeless most times if distance is not an issue. Dang thing has killed several deer!

If they ever go to straight wall, I sure hope they grandfather in and include the shotgun.

I hunt some on WMAs that only allow ML and Shotgun during gun season. I have a slug barrel for my Mossberg 12 ga. It shoots well and will knock a deer down quick. It is nice to have, in case I get into some closer range scenarios. I know If I hit the deer, it will most likely die.

If they stick straight wall into the muzzle loader season I will hunt with anything in my safe.

Bought a Mossberg 500 20ga with a rifled barrel years ago to hunt corp land around the lake as no rifles are allowed. We used to do deer drives once a year after Christmas and no fun with a single shot muzzleloader. Haven't done it in probably 5 years or more.

The one ounce sabot is my favorite round. The gun doubles as a home defense weapon and I really appreciate the BANG - FLOP feature, I don't need to track wounded animals.
I remember a shotgun hunt at Oak Ridge several years ago, we used to bring home a couple doe from there. That was when we just enjoyed hunting somewhere else on occasion

My favorite round is the Remington Premiere Copper Solid Sabot in 3 inch.
They report muzzle velocity of 1550 ft and muzzle ft pounds at 2331
Add tha to my 870 pump and a second round is available and I am back on target quickly

Yes and no. It is legal, as the TWRA controls hunting methods in each county. Yet local ordinance says discharging a firearm is illegal. This has been battled in the courts and the State Supreme Court has upheld the TWRA's ability to decide hunting methods by county. However, expect a long legal battle if you are ticketed for discharging a firearm inside Davidson County.

Right now the state legislature is looking at passing this after some duck hunters in east Tennessee were charged and found guilty of shooting inside city limits.
