First off....I'm the worse Hunter ever! Well shot at or shot the deer I've been after at 6:35 this a.m. , well after shot he just stood there n was acting correct. He never looked for where the sound came or anything. He just walked very very slow...then I loaded another round, this is were the DA comes in....I left the RAM rod in , pull the trigger!!!!!! I didn't die! But again the deer never looked...just walked off super slow! Should I back out n look after lunch or just never hunt again?
 
Look and see if you had a pass throuh with the ramrod...
Man, sorry for the rough morning, but I'd absolutely be looking for blood. Give it half an hour, and see if there is blood where you last saw him . I had a doe look completely normal after a shot, only to walk 60 yards and drop. Gave no indications of a hit. Good luck!

I too wouldn't lose hope yet. Shot one a few years back that never looked up, just eased around still eating. While I was tryinig to figure out how I missed it just fell over... kicked a time or two, and gave up the ghost.
 
I shot at a big doe one time that couldn't have been more than 30 yards. When all the noise and smoke cleared she was still standing there like nothing had happened. She leisurely moved across my front maintaining that 30 yard distance. I was able to reload and shoot again but unfortunately hit a small tree(she was in a thicket by this time)....Smoke cleared and there she stood. By the time I got reloaded again she decided to moved on up the hill and out of sight... Again like nothing had happen. Never did find that doe or any sign that I had hit her. It has always been a curious thing to me at her nonreaction to those two shots at that close range.
 
Wait til after lunch! If you did hit him you don't want to push him! I would check for blood but honestly don't except yo see any a lot of times you don't get blood with a ml. Back out for a good while though.
 
Either a bad shot, or miss. I'd check the site and see if there is any sign. More than likely there would be minimal if any. Maybe go back if you can mid afternoon and investigate further and then finish the evening off hunting if you can't find sign.
 
Well, as so often happens, I disagree with just about everybody. First, why wait? You either hit or you didn't. My feeling is, you hit him the first shot and probably a lethal hit. Therefore, why wait? Either he is dead or you missed. I seriously doubt it is a gut shot or any non-fatal hit. Now, had he run off after the second shot, I might have a different opinion. So go do some looking and tell us what you find.

Go buy another ramrod before you go hunting again, I doubt you are going to find that one intact:)

My first deer with a muzzloader and round ball was a spike. After the 15 yard shot he stood there for a moment, slowly walked 35 yards and fell over dead. After the shot in disbelief, I didn't even reload thinking if I missed there's no point in trying again. If I were you I'd go look for sign of a hit. By all means don't give up hunting - we need the entertainment! My early experiences with a muzzloader are comical now, but not back then.

X2, I am laughinng so hard too because I have seen myself and friends do the same things. Putting a bullet in but no powder, putting powder in with no bullet. Forgetting to put a primer on, putting primer on but nothing in the barrel. And yes even forgetting the rod in the gun. Excitement has made us all feel like fumbling idiots . Take a look at some of Bill Dance's blooper videos if you want to see some funny stuff. Don't feel to badly I admire you for telling your tale on a public forum. Shows the ability to open yourself up. I think you probably did get a good hit the first time as well.
 
I shot a doe on a Laurel Hill draw hunt before the WMA went trophy with a .270. I felt good about the shot except that she never acted hit. I looked for a while for blood with no luck. My dad found her the next morning two ridges over while looking for blood from a deer that he wounded, and I finished when it came by me. Lucky it was really cold that night, and we recovered both. One in a million chance.

The buck I killed Sunday didn't act scared or wounded at all, and he had no blood trail. He simply meandered away. He crashed 80 yards away due south heading toward water. I thought I'd missed, but it was a double-lung pass-through, and there's a percentage of those kills that do that very thing: meandering away not bleeding. I was fairly confident I'd gotten him, though, because it was an 18 yard shot. How far away was he?
 
Update Please! I am still laughing about the ramrod. Don't worry about it though, we have all done stuff that we thought afterwards, what was I thinking.
 
Well, we went in at 2pm and found blood immediately and also found the plastic end of the sabot with meat on it! Blood stopped after 20 yards and was done...I saw the direction he went and there is a cedar thicket 50 yards from the last place I saw him....searched it no deer, zig zagged all of our property no deer but the direction he was headed goes across the line into super thick stuff. There are 4 houses that own 5 acres with about 3 acres each of thicket, ill ask to search tomorrow.

Please, go to the front door not dressed in camo and not looking like a hunter. Pretend you are there to see about sealing their driveway or something. Be extremely polite and explain you will not disturb anything or drag a dead animal through their front yard. Tell them they won't even know you have been there and stress you hate to see an animal suffer. And for God's sake, do not have a gun visible.
