Last week a buddy and I were hunting in Wayne County and our goal was to shoot large bucks or does. Let the young bucks walk. My friend shot a doe. Upon autopsy (field dressing) we discovered she had twin fetuses (each about the size of a quarter). With one shot, three deer had been harvested. Obviously this was a post-rut, post-bred female. We have know way of knowing what the sex of the twins was.

Made us think... should we be shooting the does after rut? Assuming the land could tolerate the number of deer on the property, it seems like a strange way to "manage" the herd. If both were male deer, there's two that were taken out of the herd. If the goal is to smack the does for better doe/buck ratio, is this the time of year to be taking does? We're now thinking of holding our shots on the females once breeding season has passed.

Any thoughts on this one?

If you shoot her before she's bred, you have still probably killed 3 deer. Her, and the twins she would have gotten preggo with during the rut.

Makes no difference when you shoot them IMO.

Exactly.

Kill her before the rut and you have removed her and the twin fawns should would have produced. Kill her after she is bred and you get the exact same results.

See, I do learn something on here from time to time.

I wish I could shoot a post-rut doe...

I've had the worst luck trying to kill the last 4 does we need to take. I might actually have to start bowhunting next year to reach the quota :)
