went to processor today to pick up a couple of deer and was making small talk about all the does in fridge and lower buck count.the obvious reason being late season and rut over.he then commented on how he was seeing lots of twin and even some triplet embryos in the does.yes its been only days-weeks since rut but thats what the man was telling me.he explained that they were very small{inch or so}but he had seen numerous of them.so to my point,i personally dont shoot does after i know that they have or could have been bred.does anyone else ?does it matter or is this just a way of culling the herd?

Don't have to worry about it in my county. We have 1 doe we can take during 1 doe week the 2nd week of Dec. I probably wouldn't anyway.

does it really matter if they are killed before of after conception. either way, the fawns will never see daylight

Beat me to it. It doesn't matter when a doe is killed.

Doesn't make a difference in fawn production if you kill one before or after the rut. She won't have any fawns if you kill her either way.

The one I killed yesterday had embryos only about 1/2 inch long.

Poser a lot of people are lazy about gutting deer I guess. Maybe not so much lazy as not wanting to get their hands dirty. I don't know, but it sure makes the drag easier without the guts

I have had 2 different processors ask me this
year " had the deer been field dressed yet?"

One in TN , or in KY

Doesn't surprise me, so many wanting the quick
Easy way

I took a deer to the processor this year first time I've been to one in a few years, there was 4 deer laying there not dressed. Maybe it's me but I would sorta feel ashamed to take one like that and drop it off.

This is the best time of year to shoot does for me. They are all grouped up and back in a pattern. I pick out the ones that have twins already. Sometimes I wish hand grenades were legal.

What they said. This is twins from a doe my brother killed a few years back. While gutting we found them which was a first for me to see firsthand

man-card violation to have a processor gut your deer. Ought to be a -5 points deduction just for taking it to a processor. Women might question your worth if you can't skin a buck, don't own a meat grinder or a vacuum sealer. Hehe. Do yall call Triple AAA for a flat tire?

Lol... I skin my own and grind but I'll admit I take an occasional one to the processor usually because of time restraints.
But never call AAA for a tire! Actually not even a member. :D

Triple A is for blondes who don't know that a car needs an oil change. For when their engine locks up on the highway due to burned/sludged oil. Lol Jk.

I try to shoot does after the rut. Seems to help my buck sightings the next year during the rut. I don't take any to the processor as i process my own.

There is absolutely no reason for hunters to be able to shoot does after the rut. the FAULT squarely rests with the political appointees that serve the board and the refusal of TWRA to change this. If you kill a doe before she is bred you are statistically removing 3 deer form the herd. The doe herself and the twins that deer normally have without killing 3 animals. Just no sense in it. Morally wrong.

If I was a processor I would charge a extra $10 for deer that wasn't field dressed. That's the first thing that needs to be done in my opinion. I know guys that will drag guts and hang up and skin around them. Pure Laziness

I'll gut my own, as its part of the field experience to me as well, but the processor I've used before does charge $10 extry to do it. :)

I'm having trouble with your logic weatherby man. At first you wrote there is no reason to kill a doe AFTER the rut. But then you wrote, "If you kill a doe before she is bred..., and then go on to say you are killing 3 deer from the herd. And with your last comment, which action did you mean to imply was "Morally wrong," killing does before or after the rut?

And by the way, it doesn't matter when you kill a doe. Whether you kill her before she is bred or after, she and the fawns she could conceive or the fetal fawns she is already carrying are all removed from the future population.

Exactly.
However, I personally prefer to take my doe late season for other reasons, although seem to have my better doe-taking opportunities early season. But long as I take at least slightly more female than male deer, I'm happy with a personal "balanced" annual harvest.

I think it's morally wrong to use a Weatherby rifle to kill a whitetail deer. NOBODY needs such a gun for a little deer. EVERYBODY SHOULD BE USING A 30/30, with iron sights. And GOOD HUNTERS SHOULD ONLY BEING USING A RECURVE BOW, without sights! (Yes, I am kidding.)

Whats the difference if you kill them pre or post rut? dead deer dont have fawns.... seems your view on hunting is askew, you dont want anybody killing anything but trophy bucks, and in the next post you dont want anybody killing does, pre or post rut.....and make sure there isnt a hunter in any pics....

I killed one last weekend of season last year that had two embryos. It doesn't matter when you kill them you are still taking a doe and potential twins, so why does it matter if you take them after rut? If you took that deer before rut you would still be taking out possibility of fawns. I hope to get one more before season ends.
