I'm sitting in the hospital waiting for my baby girl to be born and reading the new regulation guide. I figure I am going to have to call a game warden to figure out, but with Shelby forest being opened up for the Velvet hunt will they still only allow hunting Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday? Just wondering if anyone has heard anything on this?

SF will only allow velvet archery hunting Saturday August 24th. TWRA Region One office in Jackson told me that.

I've hunted out there a long time and never seen a live hog on the hoof, but I've seen plenty of sign. My experience is that there is 10x more sign of them down in the river bottom (off the bluff) than up in the hills, so if you are worried about that, stay out of the bottoms. Obviously that greatly limits the real estate available to you, though...
You could tie a 14-point buck up to a tree and give me the coordinates for him, and there are days that I *still* wouldn't go out there in August. You guys are tougher than I am, for sure! Mosquitoes/ticks/chiggers/snakes in there are rough, and that bluff is no joke in the heat.
A few thoughts/reminders/pieces of info:
1 - At least the river is falling out. Assuming it doesn't flood again between now and then, I suspect there will be a "greenbelt" of forage in the areas that were underwater and now see sunshine. Might be worth going to look at, if you don't have any other spots to look for.
2 - If you don't know the area, then be aware that the vast majority of the Forest has no cell phone signal to speak of once you get off of the bluff, so be sure to use a GPS app on your phone with a pre-downloaded map. Also, there are some good maps available at the visitor center now - WAY better than the ones they used to have printed out.
3- All hunters have to register at the visitor center and display their vehicle tag on the dash of the vehicle while parked. Last duck season they actually had a guy going around to check for them. It's kind of annoying, since you can't do it the morning of the hunt due to their banker's hours.
