Sharpening your knife

I have had my knives sharpened at Bass Pro for years and the older man there has always done an awesome job. However, the last few times it has been a different guy and he is not as good and my knife just does not come back as sharp.

I thought I would look around here in Murfreesboro to get it done. Do any of yall know a place that can put a nice edge on my blade? I am horrible at it and also dont have the right stuff to sharpen that blade as it is made from a really hard steel.

im 36 and still take it to my old man he is 71 he does a great job with his trusty whetrock I have learned a lot and heard some real good hunting stories some more than once. good times still not gonna let the old man know that I can sharpen my knife myself

so true, I did the same for almost 50 years till I was given a work sharp for christmas, all of my stones are now collecting dust

bet this one is easier than the lansky, more portable(I carry mine afield for touch-ups if needed) than the work sharp.

I started reading a year or so back on the knife making forums. I ended up buying what the knife makers use. A belt sander soft backed so you get a convex edge. Start at 400 grit go to 1800 grit and then strop with a leather belt (on the sander not my belt) I've never used anything so easy, so fast and gets a knife so sharp... I also live in the 'boro, so shoot me a pm and we'll get together and sharpen your knife. ;)

I learned to use a whetstone years ago and have never had a problem keeping knives sharp but after using one of those knives with the disposable heads in them with surgically steel blades I don't think I will ever use any thing else in the field. It's just that much better IMHO. Don't knock it till you've tried it!

I'm with you PD,I used a scalpel to flesh deer hides and it made the job much easier besides the fact that I don't have the patience to sharped my knives very well. I just picked up one of the Outdoor Edge brand replaceable blade knives and I really like it.

A man needs to know how to sharpen a knife. Some people claim it's easy. It wasn't for me. It literally took me 25 years to learn.

2 things are all that matter:

the angle you hold the blade while sharpening has to be correct and repeated closely every stroke.

Repeat that stroke on the proper media in the correct sequence.

You can buy this kit, that kit or stone or electronic gizmo. but the 2 above things are the key.

For me, being able to hold the knife vertically was the key. Look at the spyderco sharp maker and see what I'm talking about.

I've seen it done on a river rock, but it already had a good edge. You can use cardboard, leather, etc to polish an edge once you've already got it set good.

Also the filament out of a street light that was diamond covered.

Sharpening your knife on a car window or rock is not much different in objective than stropping your knife blade against leather.

The blade edge will roll over and/or develop spots where the blade edge is uneven as a result of the metallurgy in the blade and your sharpening methods and skill.

Stropping TENDS to fix these minute problems. The result is generally a finished blade-and sharp.

I've tried every sharpener on the planet, but I've settled on one, the Apex Pro. It's pricey but my knives are sharper than they have ever been. I also added a leather strop from the Stropman and I can put the edge back in a jiffy.
