What are the best seed to plant inside the woods? We have several clover fields but always seems that the deer never make it to them until after dark. So I'm planting something in the woods so maybe I can catch them before they make the field.

X-2....and i am having excellent success with clover...not completey shaded but in heavier shade areas where the sun cant bake it dead! This field between two wooded areas faces west with a mornig easterly sun that doesnt fully encompass the field but about 4 or 5 hours per day. the woods to the left of the photo are actually hardwoods just behing the screen of single row pines. about 3 pm the sun then becomes only filtered for the remaining part of the afternoon and the clover just does beautifully! This photo was just made last week!

This is similar to what we are going to try and do on our lease. It is being logged right now so,we won't have as many trees along the edges of it until the undergrowth comes in completely.

IMO,. for small openings in the woods,. 1/4 acre or less,. you can't beat imperial secret spot. IF,.. you are talking about small 1/4 acre or less openings only though. You get up to 1/2 acre,. try a mix,.. either pre mixed or your own. Pre mix as in imperial pure attraction, biologic green patch plus,. or tecomate monster mix. OR mix your own,.. alittle winter wheat or oats, crimson clover and dwarf essex rape will work great. It all works good as long as you prep the soil the best you can in those small openings.
