Been thinking of selling a few rifles and stuck on this one. I have a model 70 in 338 win mag and a browning a-bolt in 338 RUM. They both are nice rifles, both accurate. Which one would you keep and why?
 
I love the Winchester model 70 control feed over a browning a-bolt.
Not sure what WINCHESTER you have?

I agree. I prefer the model 70 action. I don't know enough about either caliber to comment on that.
 
Model 70 is a super grade and the A-bolt is a Medallion with a KDF muzzle brake.
 
Well, list them both in the Classifieds and the first one to go was your decision.

The Browning is probably the one I would sell and I am a Browning nut.

I have an A Bolt in the 338 with the boss in a stainless stalker. Love the gun but never hunted with it. It's kind of a big caliber for around here. Maybe moose or dangerous game would suit it better. Mine is a safe queen.
 
The A-bolt is lighter and more powerful. The Winchester has a better grade of wood and brass is cheaper for the win mag vs the rum. Lol
 
unless my shots on game were very far away I would think the 338WM would be an ideal elk or African caliber,,the 338 RUM is a lot like the 338L I have shot a bunch,,and would flatten most anything at long range but is kinda like pulling a 12 ft jon boat with a F650 Super Duty if you wont be shooting well past 500 yards,,
 
Mr Big I agree 100%. I have taken the Winchester to Africa on one of my trips and one shot kills on an impala and gemsbuck. Probably 95% of our shooting is less than 200 yards with a rare case out to 300 yards. I have other rifles if I need to shoot beyond 300 yards.
 
I'd keep the Winchester in 338 Win mag. The 338 Win will do anything a 338 bullet should be asked to do and do it with less recoil than the Ultra Mag. Brass/ammo is a lot cheaper too. And for my personal taste I've always felt that Browning guns are too gaudy and shiny. Who wouldn't like a Model 70?? With all that there's no doubt I'd keep the Model 70 in 338 Rem Mag.
 
I would keep the Model 70 but if you really need to sell one, I would suspect there is a smaller audience for the RUM.

yes and no,,if you need to swat something at long range the 300 gr Berger OTM bullet with a BC of .818 at 2775 fps the 338 RUM is head and shoulders above the 338 WM,,but for general hunting use the 338 WM with bullets designed for it like the 210 and 250 Nosler Partition it would be my first choice if I ever went on an elk hunt,,

Daddy took a 338-06 out west and killed an elk with it at about 375 yards and he said the 210 Partition flattened it in it`s tracks,

they all have their uses you just have to match the powder capacity to the range you will be shooting,,

338 is one of the most versatile hunting caliber there is,,
 
Thanks guys for the input and overall confirmed my thoughts. I will be putting the 338 RUM up for sale soon along with the reloading dies and what brass I have for it.
