Wife and I started tomatoe seeds last spring. Had them in our utility room right off the kitchen. Watered them regularly and used a grow light. Plants got about 8" high and then started dying.Tried three different times and had same results each time.

I know we probably did something wrong; anyone have any ideas what?

What kind of potting mix did you use? If you used seed starting mix or something without a time-release fertilizer, they may have starved. I start my seeds in plastic egg cartons with seed starting Jiffy Mix, and when the first true leaves start to bud out, I transplant the best ones into 16oz Dixie cups with Miracle Gro potting mix. The MG mix has time release fertilizer that makes them grow big, green, and fast until plant-out in late April. Remember to keep the grow light a couple inches above the plants and adjust as they grow so they don't get leggy.

Also, don't water them until the potting mix has gone dry but before they start to wilt. If you can feel any moisture in the mix, they don't need to be watered.
