Brother and I went to AZ to spot and stalk Coues and mulies with a bow. Talk about tough! This has to be the toughest deer hunt in North America. The deer are so cagey. So, he's not as big as my CO mulie I rifle killed and posted her earlier, but I earned this guy for sure. Next year I'll be back for Coues.

That's the entry wound. Shot with a 100 grain slick trick. Arrow exited right behind off-side shoulder. Shot was 52yds.

This was a very tough hunt. The first evening I got 25 yds of a very small Coues buck, but let him walk. Multiple stalks blown though; super difficult.

I'd keep an eye on low point units, OTC options and leftover tags, and then just go and put boots on the ground. The AZ hunt we did is great, because you see a lot of deer rutting and get to really work on your glassing, field judging and stalking.

I know a few guys who used to live out there and they did the late rut hunts a lot. They said it was amazing at the shear number of animals you would see. One of them lucked up and did get a book coues though.
Congrats man! I would have shot that buck on a hunt that tough no doubt.

Yep, the locals don't do the Jan. archery season much because the odds are around 10%. The deer know that, and they move in to those units with force to rut. My brother did seven stalks in one day between sunrise and 3 pm, on mule deer. You see a lot off the good mulies over 160" on this hunt and the Coues are in the mountains and fingers thick.

If it had been a rifle hunt, I'd tagged out on a Coues between 80-90" the first day, in the first fifteen minutes of shooting light at 200 yards. Ha!

Awesome! I've been itching to get back to AZ and hunt those ghost. The Jan archery hunt was on my radar for a while until I got super lucky and drew a late rifle tag a few years back and killed a nice Couse.

I really want to get after some rutting Muleys, I've hunted them a couple times in MT and it's a blast.
