If I wanted to speak with someone to reccomend a change to Turkey season who would it be. I think that when turkey opens residents should get one week exclusive before out of state hunters come in. Reason being is many residents try to hunt public land that we have a vested interest in then when season opens we are flooded with non resident hunters. I know Catman had some come in on him this year and shot a bird off the roost that he was set up on, their reply was "we drove 5 hours to kill that bird". Public land is tough enough if residents could get one exclusive week it would be great. I've spoken with many people about this idea and some say it's a waste of time to even ask because the state only cares about the money and sales to non residents. I guess I'm optimistic that maybe the state would be more concerned with residential sportsman.

sounds like a great idea....... but id have to say 0% chance of that happening.

The best way to move that forward would be to attend the TFWC meeting this coming Wednesday at the Region 2 office. TWRA will be previewing 2017-18 season recommendations at this meeting to be voted on at the May meeting. You will have an opportunity to address the Commission during the season recommendation section of the agenda. Here are the meeting details:

I would be surprised to see a recommendation like that get much support from the Commission, but anything is possible. The dollar part is a MINOR issue in such an initiative. The major problem with doing something like that addressed totally against nonresidents is the potential states battles it sets in motion. For example, I'm sure that Arkansas duck hunters would like to ban all nonresidents, and especially those from an adjoining state, from being able to hunt on their public waterfowl areas. Do KY resident hunters welcome nonresident hunters flooding their public areas to deer hunt? Since their turkey seasons open before TN, would Alabama and Mississippi move to stop TN hunters on their public lands? History has shown when regs such as this are implemented, that affected states often retaliate in their regulations.

I share your concerns about TN public lands having too much pressure. But, what you are wanting to see is a pretty slippery slope to start down.

Another route to try is to make sure that you send in that recommendation during next year's season setting recommendation period. TWRA normally requests those recommendations in January. There are also email addresses to all Commissioners on the TWRA website where you could copy them as you email in your thoughts.
