Season Date Changes…in 5 years

Some of you may recall from the commission meeting earlier in the year that they did away with the Reelfoot Zone, and now will have a single statewide zone.

So, next time the Feds review each state's regs, Tennessee will be allowed to have 2 splits in its season instead of the one we presently have (which spans the Monday after Thanksgiving till the following Monday, this year).

Question is, where do you think the commission put the 2 splits in a 60-day season?

I see no point in opening the first split any earlier than the 2nd weekend of muzzleloader season in November, which is roughly when the "Reelfoot" opener used to be.

But then the 2nd split is trickier to me. Could have greater impact placing it later in the season to "rest" the birds when pressure otherwise pushes them away. Say, the week before Christmas week? Doubt anyone wants anything but legal hunting days through all of January.

I think they'll leave the first opening day where it is, weekend after thanksgiving. Then the 5 day off traditional split, weekend, and second split so that they can open back up on a weekend and run the remainder of 60 days. They might have to move the first opening day to the weekend before so that hunting can continue on until January 31, which is when the majority of hunters wanted it to end.

However they have to do it to always open a segment on weekends, always end on Jan31 after 60 total days of hunting.

Well, the trick is, lots of years you cannot both open all segments on a weekend *and* close on the 31st—like this year, where doing the latter required re-opening the second split on a Monday.

Yep. That is going to be a trick. May have to resort to first part of split being 3/4 days, moving to an earlier opener, short splits of 3/4/5 days and not just weekend splits. Leave it to a math guy at TWRA to figure out. Makes my head hurt right now.

You'd need an (ultimately ill-advised) act of Congress to do that.
