It was tough day of hunting with this heat. I started my day at 0515 finding my 5 scouted spots were occupied. So, i punted and found a ridge a hours drive away where i did not see any deer or people and left at 1100. After a brief launch with the wife i chose a small tight funnel close to a subdivision and the lake. I found out that it was too close (not illegal over 300yds and shooting away) but close enough to hear kids screaming, dogs barking, engines reving, bass booming and all the things you don't want to hear when hunting. I decided to tough it out from 1430 to dark with all the bugs.
While contemplating leaving early a shot rings out behind me a little ways. Well that guy got one maybe i should see if he pushed any to me. That moment three does come slipping in from the other direction. At 60-75yds i cocked my hammer but before i could set my trigger they started walking strait to me. At 35yds i set the trigger and when the lead doe stopped in the lane i touched it off. It was dark enough to see the pan flash and the main charge. My 50cal functioned flawlessly, i mean fast! When the smoke cleared i only saw two tails fleeing the scene. I just scored my first deer with a flintlock and my first Tennessee deer! My ball flew a little high but anchored the doe with out a second step. The ball cut a neat 1/2in hole in and 3/4in out. What a memorable hunt, you always need to stick them out.
