So I'm gearing up for my first ever trip to Colorado for an elk hunt. I recently bought a Tikka t3x lite 300wm. Looking for recommendations for a good quality scope that won't break the bank. I could spend up to around $800-900ish, but would rather stay below that.
We will be hunting in the Rangely, Colorado area (unit 21 and 30). We are expecting most shots to be around 200-400 yards per the outfitter.

Any advice and recommendations are greatly appreciated!
 
Well most any scope you buy over $500 will be of high quality so I would look through as many as you can and see what you like. At you anticipated shooting range, you won't need a very high top end of magnification but a lot of great scopes will be 3 on the low end and 12 or 15 on the high end.

When I went to CO for elk, I had a Zeiss Conquest HD 5 3-15x42 on my rifle. It was a great scope but not the lightest thing. I had an issue with Zeiss Customer Service on a pair of Conquest HD binos that made me get out of Zeiss optics.

My personal preference these days is Vortex. I have a Razor HD LH 3-15x42 that is absolutely fantastic. I really like their version of the German number 4 reticle. Here is a pic of it. You should be able to get into one of these for $700 tops.
 
1" tube and 2nd focal plane for sure. It is a ton lighter as well. I believe it weighs in right at 16 oz. whereas most of the other Razors are over 30 oz.'s

I am not 100% positive but I believe it has the same glass as the Razor HD Gen II scopes. It has all of the same glass specs on their website.
 
I have vortex, zeiss and Leupold. With the vortex most everything is in the viper range, Zeiss is hd5 and Leupold is vx3 and vx6. Of all of them the Leupold vx6 is my favorite with a 3-18x44 mag range. Optics are very subjective but you don't need a ton of magnification. 12 power on top end is more than enough and honestly a 3x9 would work. The extra magnification can be nice to give antlers a last once over or to pick something out in the oak brush. I will be back out there in 2019. Tell Bob and Eric I said hi when you get out there. Thanks for the info yall! I'm sure I'll be looking for more advice/info the closer the hunt gets. As for now, it looks like I'll be spending my time at the gun range!

Practice regularly off of shooting sticks from sitting, kneeling and standing from 100-400 yards minimum. The way that country is there are times you just can't get closer to get a shot. Good luck!
 
I have been going 20+ years. They are a big animal, you will see it easily. Quality matters, and weight really matters. I have had no problem with Burris and Leupold.
 
You have some great ideas here.......practice with that beast of a rifle. sitting, standing off-hand, shooting on (tripod) sticks, kneeling. Get tripod sticks.....forget the mono or bi sticks in my opinion......and practice using them......have them marked with tape or paint for your height.........a quick set up is done via practice........

Won't do you any good at altitude if you can't get your breath.....get in shape, have a good sling, know your trajectories up hill and down hill........

No need to shortchange yourself or your outfitter. Put 3 boxes thru that rifle BEFORE you go........and practice with ear protection.........cheap insurance........

Just trying to offer up some ideas to help you have a better hunt and get more bang for your bucks........... share your hunt and share your pics.......we love pics on this site whether an animal is killed or not........it's all good, it's what we do......
 
I'm going with DG on this trip.
It has all but consumed our every thought. All in preparation currently.
He has his 300wm together now and it's time for practice practice practice

Been spending a lot more time at the bench

Thanks for all the input and advice y'all! I'll take all I can get. I ended up going with a Virtex Viper Hs-T. So far I could not be happier!
