I have zeiss conquest 3 x 9 x 40 on my gun, my wife's gun, and my daughters gun. If u were gonna upgrade from that what would be the next step up in scopes? Also is the light gathering difference noticeable in a 50 mm to a 40 mm??

I have always been a Nikon Monarch fan. It has great light gathering. I have a 40mm and do not have a 50mm. So someone else will have to chime in on the difference. There are a lot of great scope choices out there. Everyone will have what they think is the best. I would go to the store and look through a few to see what looks best to you.
To me, an upgrade over the conquest would be a higher grade Zeis. Or a khales or Swavorski or Leica.
The reigning logic of 40 mm vs 50 mm on TNDeer in years past is that technically, a 50 will gather more light but the human eye can not differentiate between the two. Go with the 40 mm to maintain proper shooting form and therefore, accuracy.

Sounds like you have some very good scopes already.I have Meopta scopes on my rifles who makes the glass for Zeiss. You can move up to Swarorski or Khales.
Scopes don't gather light, they transmit it. Look up exit pupil to learn how a wider objective lens impacts the ability to use a higher magnification in low light. Basically in low light an objective lens of 50 mm will let you use the scope at a power of 7 when under the same circumstances you would be limited to a power of 6 with 40 mm objective lens. I personally value the lower profile of a smaller objective lens.
I have a conquest and they have good glass. Comparable to the glass in swaros. I also have a Zeiss varipoint (same glass as victory) and that is a huge step up in glass. Even in full daylight you can tell the difference.

For a hunting rifle the only significant step in the up direction would be features. For that I would look at the Trijicon Accupoint scopes. The glass may or may not be as good as the Conquest, but the tritium powered reticle makes all the difference. An illuminated reticle that doesn't use batteries and isn't affected by cold weather. Target acquisition is super easy. I have them on almost all of my rifles. Not cheap, but worth it for hunting.
