Scope mounting question - help

Savage 110 mounting a Nikon Prostaff scope.
Weaver two piece bases. Had to order extended rings because the bases are too far apart (yes the slots in the bases are in the closest possible position)
Mounted the rings (they will only go on one way because of the dial to turn the power up)
I've got the extended ring farest away from the shooter (the ring is closest to the shooter and the extention is closest to the business end of the barrel)
Right where the scope starts to bells out to 40mm end, it is touching the extention of the ring and not allowing the tube to sit down flush in the bottom of the ring.
Probably a 1/16" gap between the two.

Is this a big "NO NO" or will it be ok to just secure everything down? This is the third set of rings I have tried and this is the closest I have gotten.

Take a hammer and knock a dent in the bell of the scope. Just make sure the dent is large enough to where it doesn't touch when tightened down.

weaver makes a front base that has two slots one between the holes and one behind it so you can move the ring about 1/2 inch back,,or you can get a one piece base that has 5-6 slots..

Just get a one piece picatinny rail setup.

Took a dremel tool to the part of the extended ring that was hitting the scope. Put a little valley in it for the scope to sit. Problem solved.

I had similar problem...Savage 116. I have Burris two-piece extended bases. Scopes will fit, but not any (much) room to adjust scope forwards or back. Went to a longer scope and it solved the problem. Best other solution to your problem i've run across is a picatinny rail like others have said.

Another vote for a pic type rail. EGW makes an inexpensive good one.
