Scope issue - max windage adjustment???

Last year, my Rem 700 7Mag w/ Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 shot pretty decent groups...at least in my opinion for a novice. The rifle was made in '74 and hasn't had any major modifications that I know of. While I didn't get a chance to shoot anything, my uncle shot a non-typical buck at 250 yards with it. This year, I shot it a few times at 100 yards and my groups were precise but to the right of the target by 2.5 to 3.5 inches. I adjusted my windage to the left but reached the max adjustment (~12 or so clicks)??? Shot it again and my groups are ok but consistently to the right by 1.5 to 2 inches. Unfortunately, I can't adjust my windage anymore??? What could be going wrong??

I actually decided to go ahead and float my barrel earlier this week because it miserably failed the dollar bill test. I hope to shoot it again this weekend. We'll see what happens.
 
I despise those Redfield/Leupold windage adjust mounts,,I would highly recommend the Burris Signature Zee rings with offset inserts,,you can turn the inserts sideways to correct the windage and or the elevation taper in the rings,,I try and get a set ever time I order anything online and swapping all my rings to the Burris Signature Zee rings on all my rifles,,
 
Man...that's why I like this board so much. I have the 2 piece base mounts and I didn't realize that that was a windage adjustment screw.

I'm going to adjust scope windage back to center and bore sight using mount adjustment. At the range, I will adjust windage on the scope. Would this work?
 
Yup. Center scope, bore sight with windage screws on rear base then adjust final zero with scope adjustments. Just make sure everything is locked down when you're done.

And like mr. Big, I hate those mounts. I'm a DNZ kind of guy. Rock solid.
 
I don't mind the standard base. I haven't had any issues with my .300 win mag. I just make sure to properly torque the windage screw. I am a huge fan of signature rings though.
 
I was planning to go Stones River today and zero after all of my adjustments. I figure the 20-25 mph wind gusts could make that an issue so I sat on the couch and caught a few ball games instead.
 
Finally got to the range and was able to get re-zeroed. Thanks so much for the feedback. Man I tell ya...floating a barrel is the way to go. This old rifle has never had groups look like this. I know that many of you who shoot for competition will think that this is crap. But as a non-competitive, good ole boy, dense woods, meat huntin, rifle shooter...I will take it to the bank.

Thanks Big...that means a lot coming from you. I wanted to make 2 clicks right but my barrel was starting to get really hot. I left it as is but plan to make those adjustments and shoot it again later.
